Job Introduction

At Tarmac, who you are matters. We want to get to know you. If you share our values, take pride in a job well done, enjoy working collaboratively, and are ambitious to make things better, we’d love to hear from you.

We are currently recruiting for a Multi Skilled Operative – Road Planing to join our National Road Planing (NRP) team. Although you will be based in Thatcham, Berkshire, this role requires flexibility as you will need to go where the work is, staying overnight if and when necessary. This could include travel and work based at our other sites in Berkshire, Hampshire, Gloucester, and Wales to name a few of which a van is provided.

You will be contracted to 40-hours per week, but your work pattern may vary. Some weeks you may be working days, other times evenings, and sometimes nights. We need any prospective candidates to be accommodating to these types of working hours and be flexible; sometimes at short notice.

Prospective candidates are eligible for overtime, as and when it is available, which is paid at a premium. Any weekend & bank holiday working also comes at a higher rate when available.

At Tarmac, we are committed to creating a dynamic, inclusive environment and welcome applications from individuals with a variety of backgrounds.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Multi Skilled Operative – Road Planing, you’ll report directly to the Planing Foreman and play a key role in supporting highways planing operations.

In this hands-on role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Operating machinery, vehicles, and tools, ensuring all equipment is safe and fit for use, and reporting any defects promptly
  • Ensuring you are fully trained, authorized, and always wearing the correct PPE
  • Complying with all safety requirements, company standards, and procedures for both employees and subcontractors
  • Completing site-specific documentation and attending necessary site inductions and briefings
  • Actively promoting a strong safety culture by identifying and reporting hazards through Safety Observation and Near Miss processes
  • Supporting environmental best practice and ensuring processes are followed across all work activities

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
