Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic General Operative - Multiskilled to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
Role Purpose
To provide flexible operational and logistics support across the project, undertaking general operative duties and, where appropriately trained, competent and formally appointed, supporting vehicle movements, lifting operations and material handling through banksman, slinger/signaller and telehandler activities.
The role may be deployed as an individual discipline or as a combined multi-skilled position, depending on project requirements, the individual’s verified competencies and the scope of their appointment. No person will undertake a specialist activity unless they hold the required training, certification and authorisation.
What you'll be doing
General Operative Duties
- Support construction, logistics, mechanical, electrical and general site activities as directed by supervision.
- Assist trades and work teams with the preparation, movement and distribution of materials, tools and equipment.
- Undertake manual handling, loading, unloading and housekeeping activities in accordance with training and site procedures.
- Maintain work areas, access routes, compounds and laydown areas in a safe, tidy and organised condition.
- Carry out basic checks on equipment and promptly report defects, damage, shortages or unsafe conditions.
- Follow site rules, permits, lifting plans, risk assessments, method statements and supervisor instructions at all times.
Banksman / Vehicle Marshal Duties
- Direct and control vehicle and mobile plant movements within designated work areas.
- Establish and maintain clear exclusion zones, pedestrian segregation and safe access routes.
- Use agreed hand signals and/or radio communications to guide reversing, manoeuvring, loading and unloading activities.
- Confirm routes and work areas are suitable and free from obstructions before movements commence.
- Stop operations immediately where visibility, communication or site conditions become unsafe.
- Liaise with drivers, logistics teams and supervisors to coordinate safe and efficient vehicle movements.
Slinger / Signaller Duties
- Assist with the safe preparation and execution of lifting operations in accordance with approved lift plans.
- Select, inspect and use lifting accessories within certification and safe working load limits.
- Attach, secure and release loads using appropriate slinging methods.
- Assess load stability, balance and potential movement before and during lifting activities.
- Direct crane and lifting equipment operators using recognised hand signals and agreed radio communications.
- Maintain lifting exclusion zones and prevent unauthorised access to lifting areas.
- Quarantine and report defective lifting accessories or unsafe lifting conditions.

Telehandler Duties
- Operate telehandlers only within the scope of current certification and project authorisation.
- Complete pre-use inspections and routine safety checks, reporting defects in line with project procedures.
- Load, unload, transport and position materials safely across designated site areas.
- Assess ground conditions, gradients, overhead restrictions, capacity limits and surrounding hazards before operation.
- Use attachments correctly and ensure loads remain stable, secure and within rated capacity.
- Coordinate with banksmen, slinger/signallers, supervisors and logistics teams during material movements.
- Park, isolate and secure plant correctly when not in use.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide safe, flexible and responsive support to project operations and logistics activities.
- Undertake only duties for which you are trained, competent and formally authorised.
- Protect people, plant, materials and infrastructure during vehicle movements, lifting activities and material handling operations.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, operational discipline and compliance with site procedures.
- Work collaboratively across disciplines and adapt to changing project priorities and operational requirements.
Who we're looking for
Core Requirements
- Valid CSCS card or project-approved equivalent.
- Previous experience in construction, logistics, plant or site-based operations.
- Good awareness of health, safety and environmental requirements.
- Ability to follow instructions, risk controls and safe systems of work.
- Good communication skills and the confidence to stop work where conditions are unsafe.
- Physically capable of undertaking the duties of the role, subject to any required occupational health assessment.
Role-Specific Requirements
- Banksman/Vehicle Marshal training and project authorisation where undertaking vehicle-marshalling duties.
- Current CPCS, NPORS or other project-approved Slinger/Signaller certification where undertaking lifting duties.
- Current CPCS, NPORS or other project-approved Telehandler certification for the relevant machine category and attachments.
- Familiarity with lifting plans, exclusion zones, standard signalling methods and radio communication protocols where applicable.
- Completion of any additional site-specific induction, familiarisation, medical or competency assessments required by the project.
Desirable
- Experience working on large-scale infrastructure, energy or industrial projects.
- Multiple relevant plant, lifting or logistics competencies.
- Additional training such as Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, Working at Height or other site-support qualifications.
- Experience of materials control, laydown areas and stores operations.

Additional Notes
- The role may be filled as a General Operative with a single specialist competency or as a combined multi-skilled position.
- Holding a training card does not automatically authorise an individual to undertake an activity; project verification, familiarisation and formal appointment may also be required.
- Duties will be assigned based on competence, project phase and operational requirements.
- Working hours, location and shift arrangements will be determined by project needs.
