Portering Department at Conquest Hospital
To work in the Portering Department at Conquest Hospital on an alternating shift pattern.
Shift Pattern
- Monday to Sunday 0800-1600 and 1430-0000 on an alternating shift pattern
Additional Responsibilities
- Will also be trained to work in the waste department to cover shifts as and when required
Requirements for a Hospital Porter

Duties of a Hospital Porter
- Have good communication skills.
- Be able to work well with people from a wide range of backgrounds.
- Be fit and have high levels of stamina.
- Be able to work well under pressure.
- Act calmly and quickly in emergencies.
- Be able to follow instructions.
- Respect patient confidentiality.
- Deal sensitively with patients and visitors who are anxious, distressed or very unwell.
- Have a flexible attitude to work.
Specific Responsibilities
- Movement of patients, escort of patients and visitors.
- Mortuary duties
- Bodies to be transported to the mortuary as required.
- In the absence of the mortuary assistant to:
- Arrange access to the mortuary for appropriate persons as directed.
- It may be necessary to assist Ambulance crews and/or Contracted Funeral Director during admission.
- Deliveries
- To provide a collection and delivery service as required for internal specimens, theatre/x-ray lists.
- Equipment, Furniture and Fittings
- Patient related equipment to be clean and in good repair, defects to be reported to the Duty Team Leader.
- Furniture and other equipment to be moved around the hospitals when and where required.
- Medical Gas
- The delivery of empty/full cylinders as required. This will include manifold rooms and associated piped gas systems.
- To attend to or report any defects with the medical gas supply as required.
- Emergency Procedures
- To attend the appropriate ward or department immediately with the appropriate equipment and assistance upon hearing the alarms for:
- Cardiac arrest / Lucas Machine
- Major incident, Hazchem and CBRN incidents
- Traumas
- Helicopter landing
- Fire alarm
- Patient Collapse
