General Teaching Assistant – Primary School
Location: Merton, South West London
Salary: £93–£100 per day
Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary
Start date: 28 September 2026
A friendly and inclusive primary school in Merton is looking for a proactive General Teaching Assistant to support pupils across the curriculum. Working alongside class teachers, you will provide classroom, small-group and individual support across EYFS, Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. The school is seeking someone who can build positive relationships with pupils and help make learning accessible, engaging and enjoyable.
Responsibilities
- Supporting pupils during lessons and classroom activities
- Leading small-group literacy and numeracy interventions
- Providing additional support to pupils who need help accessing learning
- Preparing resources and maintaining an organised classroom
- Encouraging confidence, independence and positive behaviour
- Monitoring pupils’ progress and sharing observations with teachers
- Supervising pupils during transitions, breaktimes and school activities
- Following safeguarding and behaviour policies

Requirements
- Previous experience working with primary-aged children
- A patient, enthusiastic and adaptable approach
- Good spoken and written English
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Confidence supporting pupils with different abilities and needs
- A Teaching Assistant qualification is desirable but not essential
- An enhanced DBS check, or willingness to complete one
