Generator Mechanic

Your Role
We are seeking a Mechanical & Electrical Power Generation Technician to join our multi-disciplinary Maintenance Team based in Swindon.
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will provide maintenance, inspection, fault-finding, repair and operational support for a range of diesel-powered power generation equipment and associated electrical distribution systems supporting current and future UK MOD projects.
This is a hands-on role requiring a proactive individual with strong mechanical and electrical skills, a solid understanding of power generation systems, and a commitment to safety, quality and operational excellence.
We are looking for a motivated and technically capable Mechanical & Electrical Power Generation Technician with strong experience in diesel-powered generating equipment and diesel engine overhaul. You will possess excellent fault-finding abilities, be confident undertaking engine strip-down and rebuild activities, and have a practical approach to maintenance that ensures critical power systems remain safe, reliable and operational. You will thrive in a varied engineering environment and be capable of supporting both workshop-based overhaul activities and field-based operational support across a diverse range of projects.
Role Responsibilities:
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), corrective maintenance and reactive repairs on diesel-powered generators and associated equipment.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical and control system faults using engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
- Inspect, service and repair diesel engines, alternators, generator control systems, switchgear and associated distribution equipment.
- Support the installation, commissioning, testing and decommissioning of power generation equipment.
- Conduct equipment inspections, condition assessments and detailed maintenance reporting.
- Perform load testing and functional testing of generators and power distribution systems.
- Monitor equipment performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency and operational availability.
- Fault-find generator control systems, battery charging systems, protection systems and electrical distribution equipment.
- Complete maintenance records, inspection reports and asset management information accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are completed safely and in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements and industry standards.
- Support management of spares, consumables and critical equipment inventory.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior technicians where required.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, safety and environmental compliance within workshop and operational areas.
- Support UK travel and occasional overseas deployments as required by project demands.
- Carry out engine strip-down, inspection, repair and rebuild activities on diesel engines in accordance with manufacturer specifications and engineering standards.
- Diagnose engine-related faults including fuel, cooling, lubrication, air intake and exhaust system defects.
- Measure, inspect and assess engine components for wear, damage and serviceability using appropriate precision measuring equipment.
- Replace and repair major engine components including cylinder heads, pistons, liners, crankshafts, camshafts, injectors, fuel systems and turbochargers.
- Conduct post-repair functional testing and performance verification to ensure equipment meets operational requirements.
- Produce detailed inspection and overhaul reports identifying faults, remedial actions and recommendations for future maintenance.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
- NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds Level 3, BTEC Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Electrical, Mechanical or Multi-Skilled Engineering.
- Proven experience in the maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of diesel-powered power generation equipment.
- Experience with diesel engines, alternators, generator control systems and electrical distribution equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, engineering drawings and technical manuals.
- Knowledge of generator synchronisation, load sharing and power management systems.
- Understanding of electrical testing and fault-finding techniques.
- Understanding of safe systems of work, risk assessments and Health & Safety requirements.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate UK Security Clearance.
- Proven experience in the strip, inspection, repair, overhaul and rebuild of diesel engines.
- Strong understanding of diesel engine systems, including fuel injection, lubrication, cooling, air intake and exhaust systems.
- Experience using precision measuring equipment such as micrometers, bore gauges, dial test indicators and vernier calipers.
- Ability to interpret manufacturers' workshop manuals, overhaul procedures and engineering specifications.
- Knowledge of engine performance diagnostics and failure analysis techniques.

Desirable:
- Previous experience supporting MOD, defence or government-related projects.
- Experience working on standby, prime or continuous-duty power generation systems.
- Knowledge of Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), switchboards and electrical distribution networks.
- Experience with generator manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Cummins, FG Wilson, Perkins, JCB, Himoinsa or Kohler.
- Familiarity with generator control systems including Deep Sea Electronics (DSE), ComAp or Woodward.
- Experience with low-voltage electrical distribution and testing.
- Knowledge of PLCs, instrumentation and power management systems.
- Experience commissioning and load testing power generation equipment.
- Experience supervising, mentoring or supporting junior technicians.
- Relevant electrical qualifications such as 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
- Forklift, IPAF, MEWP or other relevant engineering certifications.
- Experience conducting major engine overhauls on industrial, military or power generation equipment.
- Familiarity with Caterpillar, Cummins, Perkins, MTU, Volvo Penta, Scania or similar diesel engine platforms.
- Experience with fuel injection system testing, calibration and engine performance optimisation.
- Knowledge of vibration analysis, oil sampling and condition-based monitoring techniques.
The role is based full time onsite in Swindon.
