Role description:
We have a specific need for a geo-environmental consultant to join our dedicated team working on the redevelopment of the former Redcar Steelworks, supervising remediation works, undertaking data collection, site management, task management, reporting and interpretation of results on this important project.
We are looking for a consultant at the start of their career, who has experience of supporting on land contamination and/or ground condition assessments. For the first 1-2 years of the role, you will be dedicated to the ongoing works at Redcar full time. Depending on your experience and progress within the project, this position has the potential to develop into a site manager role, where you will take on the responsibility of managing other site consultants and supervisors. Beyond this, you will be an integrated member of the UK Geo-environmental team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and conduct a variety of different tasks including ground investigations, environmental sampling, technical report writing, environmental risk assessment, development of material management plans and waste classification that will impact the success of said projects.

Our environmental team works closely with our global colleagues to share knowledge and collaborate on projects all over the world.
The location for the role is the Northeast of England, in a commutable location to the former Redcar Steelworks.
Role accountabilities:
- Environmental and geotechnical soil sampling – Collection of soil samples from stockpiles, excavations and trial pits for the purposes of laboratory testing & analysis.
- Environmental water sampling - Collection of groundwater and surface water samples. This may include the use of portable equipment such as interface probes, dip meters, multiparameter meters and groundwater pumps.
- Geotechnical Data Capture – Collection of data from instrumentation, such as inclinometers.
- Environmental monitoring - Use of portable equipment such as surveying equipment, Photo Ionization Detectors (PIDs) and landfill gas analysers to collect data as specified by the Project Team.
- Remediation System Monitoring – Attendance at remediation plant to undertake routine maintenance checks, optimize system operation and collect performance data.
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with Arcadis staff and client contacts on projects.
- Implementing all works in line with both the clients and Arcadis’ expectations around quality and Health and Safety.
- Ensuring that where practicable all data collection on site is in a digital format using tablet devices or laptops.
- Timely submission of timesheets and the data captured to the wider project teams.
- Performing of other duties and responsibilities as requires from time to time by your manager or Arcadis.

More General
Following completion of works at the former Redcar Steelworks you will be involved in a variety of different projects throughout the UK, requiring:
- Desk studies and preliminary risk assessments.
- Field based work undertaken across the UK, including:
- Site management of ground investigations and associated works, with a strong focus on health and safety management and documentation.
- The collection of site characterisation data, including soil & groundwater sampling, the logging of soils to appropriate British Standards and undertaking suitable in-situ field testing.
- The collection of environmental samples and management of sample collection paperwork, and scheduling for laboratory analysis
- The compilation of site data for factual reports, and development of interpretive reports including conceptual site models and undertaking of generic risk assessments.
- Work collaboratively with other sectors/disciplines to ensure the integrity of the overall project.
- Produce project outputs (e.g. documentation, reports, specifications) and ensure that they meet or exceed client expectations and Arcadis requirements and comply with relevant national standards and codes of practice.
- Develop effective working relationships with the Project Manager and with the client and ensure effective communication of progress and changes and the resolution of issues.
- Develop and maintain a good understanding of the services delivered by Arcadis, of the client’s business and the industry sector to facilitate personal networking and to consolidate personal and company credibility in the industry.

Qualifications & Experience:
- BSc qualified (or higher) in Geology, Environmental Geoscience, Environmental Science or similar, or equivalent.
- Entry level experience of working on land contamination projects.
- Ability to work both independently, within a local office-based team, and larger multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects to tight deadlines and budgets.
- Experience of working on site and in supervising contractors e.g. drillers or remediation contractors
- Experience of report writing – e.g. Environmental Phase 1 & 2
- An awareness of potential risks associated with geo-environmental investigations, including health & safety, budgetary and technical considerations.
- Working towards professional membership and chartership.
