Job Family Group: Subsurface Group

Job Description:

Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner!

Let me tell you about the role

CNS (Base and New Fields) is in the early stages of planning further infill wells for execution in 2028 and future targets will be influenced potentially by the asset’s future seismic data. There is an opportunity here to influence and drive targets and wells through FEL1, IWD well planning process, support implement stage of the well delivery, contribute to post-well evaluation and takeaways, and to have an impact on the design-to-cost and capital efficiency of the project.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Geoscientist to join the team supporting IWD in a very geologically diverse region. The North Sea Subsurface team is a community of approximately 100 people mostly split between Aberdeen and Sunbury.

What you will deliver

Senior technical contributor, supporting / leading well planning activities, within the integrated well delivery team, SPA for own well but supporting other well planning and execute activities and future IRP opportunities. Coaching of other geoscientists within the squad and helping to QC inputs and uncertainty ranges to help safely deliver wells whilst managing subsurface uncertainty and risks in well planning.

  • Define target objectives and desired outcomes for wells consistent with depletion plans, following bp’s 100100 well delivery processes including: well concept summary, statement of requirements, data acquisition program, geological scenarios, drilling and geological operations plan and pre-drill section reviews.
  • With support of other team members, describe the structural and stratigraphic framework and associated uncertainties/risks, including geological and depth uncertainties.
  • Assist the operations geologist with the creation of operational decision trees, pre-drill risk registers including no drilling surprises (NDS), mitigations and contingency plans.
  • Ensure integration of well planning and operational activity through strong collaboration with reservoir management, depletion management, integrated well delivery, PPFG and geomechanics specialists, drilling and completions.
  • Participate as required in operational discussions and support the operations geologist with relevant real-time / short-order interpretations and decisions.
  • Contribute to relevant end-of-well decision making and documentation, including lessons learned and ensuring new well data is incorporated into updated subsurface models and understanding including pick sets, interpretation and depth calibration.
  • Present to bp management and JV during well delivery and adhere to NSTA requirements pre-spud and end of well closeout.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
