About the Company
We are an elite, high-margin UK power engineering consultancy specialising in grid connections, renewable energy infrastructure and hyperscale data centre projects, with engineering experience across 132kV and 400kV networks.
As our project portfolio continues to grow, we are developing a proprietary internal technology platform to transform how power infrastructure routes are identified, assessed and delivered.
We are looking for a talented Geospatial Software Engineer to take a leading role in designing, developing and deploying an automated route-optimisation engine for UK linear infrastructure projects.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of geospatial engineering, software development, electrical infrastructure and automation, building technology that will directly influence how major UK energy projects are planned and designed.
The Role
You will design and build a proprietary geospatial platform capable of ingesting live UK environmental, infrastructure and cadastral datasets, analysing spatial constraints and automatically generating optimised, engineering-ready corridors for underground cables and overhead lines.
The system will integrate data from sources such as DEFRA, Ordnance Survey and National Grid, apply configurable engineering and environmental constraints, and produce clean spatial outputs for our high-volume AutoCAD production teams in the UK and India.
You will have significant ownership of the architecture, algorithms and development roadmap of this platform.
Key Responsibilities

Geospatial Data Engineering & ETL
- Design and develop automated Python-based ETL pipelines for UK geospatial datasets.
- Connect to and ingest spatial data through REST APIs, WFS and WMS services.
- Integrate datasets from sources including:
- DEFRA Data Services Platform
- Ordnance Survey Data Hub
- National Grid Open Data
- Environmental and infrastructure registries
- Process and standardise vector datasets including environmental, planning, transport and infrastructure constraints.
- Develop robust data validation, transformation and update workflows.
- Build reusable processes for maintaining large geospatial datasets.

Automated Route Optimisation
- Develop sophisticated least-cost path and spatial optimisation algorithms for linear infrastructure.
- Build routing engines using technologies such as Dijkstra, A*, graph-based optimisation and other suitable optimisation techniques.
- Use configurable constraint and penalty models to identify optimal cable and overhead-line corridors.
- Apply environmental, planning, engineering and constructability constraints to routing calculations.
- Develop methods for automatically identifying and avoiding high-risk or restricted areas.
- Optimise routes based on factors such as distance, crossings, environmental constraints, land use, infrastructure interfaces and engineering complexity.

GIS-to-CAD Automation
- Develop automated workflows to convert optimised GIS routes into CAD-ready geometry.
- Generate clean DXF/DWG-compatible outputs suitable for downstream engineering design.
- Integrate GIS and CAD workflows using tools such as ezdxf and AutoCAD APIs/automation.
- Ensure coordinate systems, geometry, layers and metadata are correctly handled.
- Minimise manual tracing and repetitive drafting work for our production engineering teams.

Automated Risk & Crossings Analysis
- Develop automated spatial analysis tools to cross-reference proposed routes against known constraints and boundaries.
- Automatically identify environmental, infrastructure, planning and other route crossings.
- Generate Red-Amber-Green (RAG) risk assessments for proposed corridors.
- Produce automated reports in formats such as Excel and PDF.
- Create clear spatial and tabular outputs that can be incorporated into engineering and project-development workflows.

Platform & Database Development
- Design and maintain spatial databases using PostgreSQL/PostGIS.
- Develop efficient spatial queries and indexing strategies for large datasets.
- Build modular, scalable and maintainable geospatial software.
- Contribute to the architecture of the wider internal geospatial platform.
- Where appropriate, deploy geospatial processing workloads and data repositories within AWS or Azure environments.
Required Technical Skills
Essential
- Expert-level Python development experience.
- Strong professional experience with geospatial data processing and analysis.
- Extensive experience with:
- GeoPandas
- Shapely
- GDAL/OGR
- Fiona
- PyQGIS / QGIS
- NetworkX
- Strong understanding of coordinate reference systems, projections, spatial transformations and vector geometry.
- Experience developing automated ETL/data pipelines.
- Experience integrating REST APIs, WFS and WMS services.
- Strong experience with PostgreSQL/PostGIS and spatial database design.
- Experience developing algorithms for route optimisation, spatial analysis or network analysis.
- Experience converting or exporting GIS geometry into CAD/DXF/DWG workflows.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including version control, testing, documentation and maintainable code.
Desirable / Bonus Experience
- The following would be highly advantageous:
- Experience working on electricity transmission/distribution, grid connection or renewable energy projects.
- Experience with underground cable, overhead-line, pipeline, rail or highway routing.
- Knowledge of the UK electricity network and infrastructure environment.
- Familiarity with UK planning, environmental and infrastructure datasets.
- Experience working with DEFRA, Ordnance Survey or National Grid datasets.
- Familiarity with DNO/IDNO network data structures.
- Experience building geospatial routing or corridor-selection tools.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
- Experience building internal engineering software, APIs or data platforms.
- Understanding of power infrastructure design and the practical constraints associated with 132kV/400kV projects would be a significant advantage.
