Our digital, data and technology solutions are used by globally recognised public and private sector brands operating in a variety of sectors including Civil Defence, Healthcare, Sustainable Environment and Land Asset Management, and Digital Democracy.

Role Responsibilities

This is a varied role that calls for adaptability, ambition, and a proactive approach to working in a fast-paced, agile environment. You will:

  • Deliver innovative geospatial solutions: Design, build and continually improve enterprise-scale software platforms, APIs and cloud infrastructure that enable advanced spatial analytics, Earth Observation processing, AI-powered location intelligence and modern GIS services for public and private sector clients.
  • Collaborate across disciplines: Work alongside Senior Engineers, Data Scientists, Geospatial Specialists, User-Centred Designers and Delivery Managers to design innovative solutions, contribute to architecture, and deliver high-quality digital services.
  • Ensure standards and best practice: Follow established approaches, provide accurate technical estimates, and escalate risks or issues where required.
  • Communicate and build relationships: Present prototypes, solutions, and progress updates clearly to stakeholders, while building strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues, clients, and partner organisations.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years’ proven experience in a GIS Software Engineering role, with strong skills in .NET, Java or Python, plus modern JavaScript libraries.
  • Experience designing scalable geospatial applications using AWS or Azure.
  • Experience working with GIS platforms, geospatial data and spatial APIs.
  • Knowledge of open geospatial technologies including PostGIS, GeoServer, OpenLayers, Leaflet, GDAL or QGIS.
  • Experience with geospatial applications that integrate cloud platforms, AI, and Earth Observation data to solve real-world challenges.
  • Understanding of modern software architecture including microservices, APIs, serverless computing and event-driven systems.
  • Experience working in Agile teams using Scrum, Kanban and test-driven development.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with experience working within multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience processing/analysing Earth Observation or remote sensing data.
  • Exposure to AI, Machine Learning or GeoAI applied to spatial data.
  • Experience with raster processing, vector tiling or spatial ETL workflows.
  • Experience working with Geographic Foundation Models (GeoFMs), large geospatial AI models or multimodal spatial machine learning would be advantageous.
  • Experience working within consultancy environments and engaging directly with clients.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions or Terraform.
  • Understanding of the Government Digital Service Standard and Technology Code of Practice.
