Geotechnical Specialist

We have a great opportunity for a Geotechnical Specialist to join the Viaro team, based in either our London or Aberdeen offices. The role is available on a part-time basis (3 days per week) to cover a period of up to one year. We invite applicants interested in working with us on either a temporary or contract basis.

Through our main subsidiary RockRose Energy, Viaro operates in the North Sea and has interests in over 30 fields within the UKCS and the Netherlands. We are committed to supporting the long-term energy security of the UK and our assets account for 9% of daily gas production.

Role Description

The Geotechnical Specialist provides a full range of petro-technical support to the subsurface and assets teams, including subsurface data management, collation, manipulation, loading and mapping. Also, they fulfil the role of Information and Samples Coordinator (ISC) and are the focal point for Viaro’s data archiving in the NSTA administered National Data Repository (NDR) and submission of the yearly stewardship survey and infrastructure survey (for operated assets only).

The Geotechnical Specialist ensures that accurate data is available across a variety of software packages, enabling efficient geoscience and petroleum engineering evaluations to be carried out. They organise subsurface data, work folders / share point sites and databases in such ways that it is easy to access the reference data and key interpretations (seismic surveys, well logs, formation tops, etc.) for analysis and interpretation. The job holder is expected to actively manage subsurface data, both electronic and physical data, seeking opportunities to minimise data storage costs through upload of electronic data to the NDR, and disposal of approved legacy physical data. The job holder is expected to develop their skills with existing subsurface software and look for new optimal solutions to improve data management and team’s efficiency with data handling and interpretation. Experienced with technical geoscience software, data loading and management best practices. The job holder is expected to use their experience and judgement to overcome day-to-day problems and make decisions regarding database management, structure and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Management of subsurface data, including loading, storage/cataloguing and archiving of electronic and physical data.
  • Through data preparation and manipulation produce accurate, high quality subsurface map sets capable of being shared across multiple applications to assist the subsurface team in their geologic and engineering evaluations and provide Management with up-to-date industry activity.
  • Focal point for data archiving in the National Data Repository (NDR). Also, primary contact for any requests for company seismic or well data from third parties.
  • Manage contracts for cost effective offsite storage of subsurface data.
  • In collaboration with IT, manage subsurface software licence contracts, including liaison with contractor management, negotiation of amendments to contract rates and participation in contract review meetings.

Relationships

  • Subsurface team for day-to-day work and project support and data management/stewardship.
  • External consultants i.e. Drilling Engineers, Petrophysicist, Subsurface Experts.
  • Asset managers for day-to-day support of asset projects and JV subsurface data and information management.
  • IT personnel for software / hardware system development / maintenance.
  • Software / hardware vendors for product maintenance and licence upgrade.
  • NSTA for distribution of mandatory data and administration of NDR.

Qualifications

  • Professionally qualified to degree level in geotechnical discipline or several years working in a similar environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

Required Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to develop robust data management and workflow practices.
  • Skilled user of software packages such as Petrel, ArcGIS, Delfi cloud environment (SLB), etc.
  • A strong self-starter, comfortable working with a high level of autonomy and taking the lead on projects, and decisions when needed.
  • Strong team ethic and collaborator, comfortable working with multiple disciplines and presenting, as and when needed, to senior management.

Required Experience:

  • Good understanding of geological / geophysical principles and aims.
  • Experienced in management of subsurface data, including workflows for transfer of data between software packages.
  • Advanced knowledge of NSTA NDR and data and samples guidelines.

Specialised Job Knowledge:

  • Experienced user of standard subsurface software Petrel, DUG Insight, Kingdom, IP/Geolog, etc.
  • Understanding of oil and gas industry regulatory regime with respect to data management.
  • Working knowledge of Joint Venture protocol to assist subsurface and assets teams in TCM material preparation and management.
