Summary
The GIS Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining geospatial applications and solutions that support the organization’s mapping and spatial data needs. The role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to build scalable, secure, and efficient GIS systems. A strong understanding of geospatial technologies, spatial data analysis, and modern development practices is essential. The successful candidate will contribute to the full development lifecycle and ensure alignment with business and technical requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather and analyze geospatial and software requirements.
- Design, develop, test, and deploy GIS-based applications and tools.
- Work with spatial data formats and databases (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON, PostGIS).
- Develop and integrate GIS APIs and mapping services.
- Build interactive maps and geospatial visualizations.
- Perform spatial data analysis and processing.
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and performance of GIS systems.
- Participate in code reviews to ensure quality and consistency.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to geospatial applications.
- Work closely with data analysts, engineers, and product teams to deliver features.
- Contribute to system architecture and technical design discussions.
- Maintain documentation for geospatial systems, code, and workflows.
- Stay up to date with emerging GIS technologies, tools, and industry trends.

Qualifications and Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in GIS development or geospatial software engineering.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or similar.
- Experience with GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
- Strong understanding of spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, Spatial SQL).
- Experience with web mapping libraries (e.g., Leaflet, OpenLayers, Mapbox GL JS).
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs and geospatial web services (WMS, WFS).
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git).
- Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) is a plus.
- Understanding of geospatial data standards and coordinate systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Experience working in the UK Public Sector is a plus.
