About the Job

National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Technician to join our GIS and Registration team within the Business Services Directorate. As a GIS Technician, you will support the organisation's work in ensuring that the creation and maintenance of GIS datasets, in relation to the operational estate, surplus land and Strategic Road Network.

The GIS Technician will also support with preparing data for HM Land Registry accelerated registration program and the production of spatial datasets to the business. The work will contribute to the delivery of paragraph 9.9 of the licensing agreement between the Government and National Highways, facilitating the representation of land ownership and maintenance records.

Please note this role will be based from our Manchester office however; travel to regional offices to attend team meetings may be required.

  • Accurately investigate, manipulate, and present complex geospatial information, datasets, and documents.
  • Generate geospatial datasets for business wide use to defined data specifications.
  • Interpret legal documents, imagery, and other sources of validated information to capture, attribute, and compile digital data to defined specifications.
  • Identify and obtain maps, digital data, and maintenance information from Local Authorities.
  • Support operational enquiries from other teams, demonstrating the recorded boundaries and aiding the interpretation of information displayed on internal digital mapping systems.

About You

  • A degree or relevant experience in GIS or related subject
  • Good understanding of coordinate systems, cartography and digital representation of real-world structures
  • Exposure to basic programming languages and specialist software (FME, R and Python)
  • Experience of using multiple sources of information to make timely and informed decisions
  • Good experience utilising common GIS tools like QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS online tools
