The Role
As a GL – Ops Environmental Test, you will be responsible for ensuring that the leadership of, and the availability of ETC facilities meet the demands of primarily the Weapons Services Integrated Delivery Teams and the wider UK Defence Business needs.
Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for ensuring a Safe System of Work is in place and enacted for all activities and empowered to make the necessary changes or stop work whenever they believe there to be a risk to people, facilities or the environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and overseeing Environmental Testing Centre (ETC) operations, acting as the focal point for environmental testing capability, delivery, and facility performance
- Ensuring safe, secure, and compliant trial delivery, serving as Providing Manager signatory and maintaining adherence to QinetiQ, regulatory, and UKAS requirements
- Driving continuous improvement and operational excellence, enhancing facility availability, efficiency, capacity, quality, and overall performance
- Managing financial and business performance, including budget ownership, forecasting, risk management, business continuity, and stakeholder engagement to support effective trial programmes
- Developing and implementing strategic growth plans for ETC facilities, aligning people, processes, technology, and infrastructure with current and future business needs
- Leading, developing, and supporting a high-performing workforce, ensuring clear responsibilities, competence development, career progression, and a strong culture of diversity, inclusion, and accountability

Essential experience of the GL – Ops Environmental Test:
- Extensive operational leadership experience within a high-hazard facility or regulated environment
- Proven experience in environmental testing and associated operational processes
- Demonstrable experience working with Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME)
- Strong track record of developing, coaching and line managing individuals and teams
- Experience building and leading high-performing teams within complex matrix and technical environments
- Proven ability to drive process improvement and lead change management initiatives to deliver business objectives
Essential qualifications for the GL – Ops Environmental Test:
- A first degree in Science, Operations or Engineering, or an equivalent, nationally recognised or a professional qualification

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Shoeburyness site and is fully on-site.

QinetiQ Shoeburyness is a significant test and evaluation facility specialising in defence and security technologies. The site is focused on Environmental Testing including the evaluation of various ordnance, explosives and related systems. Implementing measures to ensure that testing activities comply with environmental regulations and minimise ecological impact.
