Senior Principal Engineer & Technology Architect – Enterprise Solutions

The Enterprise Solutions Technology division delivers workflow solutions across key areas:

Responsibilities & Impact

We seek a senior technology leader to partner directly with the Head of Technology for Enterprise Solutions in shaping the technology roadmap for a complex, regulated financial-services estate.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Hands-on is critical – This is a hands-on principal engineering and architecture role, not a governance-only or advisory function.
  • Ground technology strategy in reality – Work with the Head of Technology to refine strategy, stress-testing it against engineering, regulatory, and operational constraints.
  • Turn strategy into execution – Collaborate with:
    • Senior engineering leaders
    • Platform teams
    • Product partners
  • Know when to push, simplify, stop – Apply operational judgment to:
    • High-risk, high-impact initiatives
    • Major incidents and recovery efforts
  • Act as technology authority – Shape architecture, design and delivery decisions across teams and domains through influence (not formal management).
  • Balance priorities:
    • Long-term strategy
    • Near-term delivery constraints
    • Operational resilience
    • Regulatory requirements
  • Represent tech strategy – Communicate design decisions and trade-offs clearly and credibly to clients, stakeholders, and regulators to ensure buildability, operability, and defendability.

Core outcome: Strengthen the technology function by ensuring strategy is realistic, actionable, and resilient.


What We’re Looking For

Core Criteria:

  • **25+ years ** of experience building high-availability systems in:
    • Tier-1 banks
    • Capital markets infrastructure
    • Regulated environments with strict operational demands
  • Production system ownership experience – Able to:
    • Handle real operational load
    • Read and write production-grade code
    • Work alongside senior engineers
  • Strategic technical leadership – Proven track record in shaping and owning multi-year technology strategies and roadmaps for:
    • Complex, regulated, data-intensive platforms
    • Banking and financial services (covers:
      • Public/private markets
      • Syndicated lending
      • Securities processing
      • Counterparty & client lifecycle management
      • Regulatory reporting
  • Architecture governance – Experience defining and enforcing:
    • Reference architectures
    • Design standards
    • Architecture guardrails
    • Ensuring scalability, consistency, and sustainability
  • Deep domain expertise – Thorough knowledge of:
    • Financial product workflows
    • Data flows
    • Controls and regulatory use cases
  • System design mastery – Skilled in designing:
    • Distributed, event-driven systems
    • Data-intensive architectures (including scaling strategies and failure isolation)
  • Cloud and multi-tenant architecture – Strong experience with:
    • AWS | Azure | GCP
    • Managed services trade-offs
    • Multi-region and multi-tenant designs
    • Data residency requirements
    • Cost, performance, and resilience considerations
  • Emerging architecture – Expertise in evaluating and implementing:
    • Agent-based systems
    • Service abstractions
    • Semantic data models
    • Knowledge graphs (and recognition of their applicable use cases)
  • AI-enabled systems – Deep understanding of AI frameworks to ensure they are:
    • Explainable
    • Auditable
    • Operationally safe
    • Objectively assess when AI vs. deterministic/rules-based approaches are optimal
  • AI/ML in production – Hands-on experience with:
    • High-quality data metrics
    • Anomaly detection workflows
    • Fraud/AML systems
    • Regulated automation deployment
  • Security and compliance – Embeds: identity, data protection, failure containment, and regulatory risk into design principles
  • Teaching and mentoring – Acts as a technical multiplier by:
    • Hands-on problem-solving
    • Design reviews
    • Practical mentoring (rather than formal line management)
  • Judgment under pressure – Calmly shapes decisions without authoritative oversight
  • Communications – Translates complex technical concepts clearly to:
    • Business teams
    • Clients
    • Regulatory stakeholders
  • Evidence-driven approach – Success measured by:
    • Buildability
    • Reducing near-stage surprises/repeated incidents
    • Scalability
    • Operational recovery alignment
    • Regulatory defensibility
