Overview

Mylar Specialty Films UK Ltd is a leading global producer of PET and PEN polyester films, specializing in film products and related services for markets and industries including Battery Materials, Durable Cards, Electrical Insulation and Capacitors, Flexible Electronics, Healthcare, Imaging Media, Labels, Packaging, Photovoltaics, and many more. Mylar Specialty Films is a 50/50 Joint Venture between Celanese Corporation and Teijin Limited. The business has approximately 2000 employees worldwide, with manufacturing sites in Asia Pacific, America, and Europe. The UK production site is based in Dumfries, Scotland.

We are seeking a Global Laboratory Technician to join our Technology and Innovation team at our Dumfries facility. This is an excellent opportunity to support critical laboratory operations and analytical activities that serve the wider business.

In this hands-on role, you will work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and cross-functional teams across T&I, Quality, and Manufacturing to deliver accurate testing, analysis, and technical support. You'll play a vital part in maintaining a safe, efficient, and well-organised laboratory environment while contributing to equipment management, method development, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This position offers broad exposure to diverse products and testing techniques, providing excellent opportunities to develop your technical expertise and laboratory skills within a global organisation.

Responsibilities

Laboratory Operations & Testing

  • Support day-to-day laboratory activities across multiple technical areas
  • Conduct routine and non-routine testing and analysis with accurate documentation of observations, results, and conclusions
  • Prepare clear and detailed technical reports

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Product Stewardship, and Commercial teams to support analytical investigations and technical activities
  • Contribute to laboratory investigations, root cause analysis, and product development projects

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Review, update, and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs), test methods, and risk assessments
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency, quality, and safety performance

Equipment & Laboratory Management

  • Support maintenance, calibration, and servicing of laboratory equipment with accurate record-keeping
  • Assist with equipment troubleshooting and liaise with internal and external service providers
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, consumables, and housekeeping standards

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all activities comply with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards
  • Demonstrate and promote safe working practices

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in a scientific discipline (Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field preferred)
  • Analytical laboratory experience, ideally 2 years

Technical Skills

  • Good working knowledge of analytical and characterisation techniques, including mechanical, thermal, and spectroscopic testing methods
  • Ability to balance practical laboratory skills with analytical thinking to deliver accurate, high-quality results
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and relevant laboratory/reporting software

  • Collaborative team player who can also work independently
  • Strong problem-solver with sound decision-making abilities
  • Excellent communicator – both written and verbal, with the ability to produce quality technical reports
