Within this segment, Eaton has an opening for a Global Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Data Center Segment. The role serves as the senior technical authority and thought leader for mechanical and thermal infrastructure design across Eaton’s global data center portfolio. This role shapes cooling and thermal management strategies for hyperscale and enterprise data centers, ensuring scalable, resilient, and energy-efficient solutions aligned to Eaton’s global technology roadmap. The position provides end-to-end technical leadership from early-stage concept development through detailed design, validation, and commissioning, working closely with global engineering teams, customers, consultants, and strategic partners.
What you’ll do:
- Global Technical Leadership & Design Authority
- Act as the global technical authority for mechanical and thermal systems within Eaton’s Data Center Segment by using technical engineering skillset.
- Translate product design requirements into manufacturable solutions, ensuring Design for Manufacturing (DFM) alignment with R&D teams.
- Develop and standardize industrialization methodologies, processes and best practices, contributing to manufacturing engineering knowledge and capability.
- Lead the design, validation, and review of advanced data center cooling architectures using Eaton and third-party technologies.
- Provide expert guidance on whitespace design, central plant systems, AHUs, fan wall systems, and site-wide water and heat rejection infrastructure using innovative engineering solutions to address complex challenges.

Advanced Cooling Strategies & Innovation
- Define and promote global best practices for air-based, liquid-based, and hybrid cooling solutions, including hot aisle/cold aisle containment.
- Research, evaluate, and develop design approaches for emerging technologies such as direct-to-chip liquid cooling, immersion cooling interfaces, and CDUs.
- Support innovation aligned with increasing IT loads, AI/HPC applications, and next-generation thermal density requirements.

Performance Optimization & Engineering Excellence
- Lead or support CFD analysis to optimize airflow, temperature distribution, efficiency, and resilience under normal and failure conditions.
- Ensure designs meet or exceed efficiency, availability, and sustainability targets (e.g., PUE and related performance metrics).
- Review and challenge global mechanical designs to ensure technical consistency, scalability, and engineering excellence.

Cross-Functional & Customer Engagement
- Partner with Systems Engineering, Electrical Design, Controls, Product Management, and Sales to ensure alignment from proposal through execution.
- Provide senior technical input in customer workshops, design reviews, and technical discussions as a trusted advisor.
- Support global pursuits by interpreting customer specifications and proactively mitigating technical risk.

Standards, Documentation & Knowledge Leadership
- Develop and govern global mechanical design standards, reference architectures, and guidelines for data center applications.
- Produce and review technical specifications, reports, and documentation in alignment with international standards (e.g., ASHRAE, CIBSE, OCP).
- Mentor mechanical engineers globally and support knowledge transfer to strengthen Eaton’s engineering capability.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
- 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience with significant exposure to mission-critical facilities and data center environments.
Skills:
- Deep technical expertise in data center mechanical systems, including HVAC, chilled water plants, pumps, heat exchangers, motors, and BMS integration.
- Strong proficiency with engineering and simulation tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and CFD platforms.
- Proven capability in program management, change management execution, and governance across global or matrixed organizations.
- Proven experience operating at a global or enterprise level, supporting multi-region delivery models.
- Lead clarification and resolution of complex technical, commercial, and execution issues.
- Escalate effectively when required, ensuring speed, transparency, and leadership alignment.
- Chartered Engineer status or active progress toward chartership.
- Demonstrated experience supporting hyperscale data center customers and global programs.
- Experience influencing stakeholders without direct authority in matrixed organizations.
