Global Safety and Security Manager

The role leads Itad's approach to travel in higher risk destinations, ensuring appropriate security advice, risk assessment, mitigation planning and travel approval processes are in place. Through the GSS team and specialist advisers where required, the function supports travellers and project teams with risk assessments, traveller briefings, incident response arrangements and monitoring processes that are proportionate to the operating environment and risk profile.

The GSS Manager provides a high-quality technical service to Practices, helping project teams identify practical and proportionate safety and security arrangements that enable delivery within Itad’s risk appetite. The role works through collaboration, advice and facilitation, supporting teams to build safety and security into project planning and delivery rather than operating as a separate control function. The role also manages strategic relationships with travel, security and assistance providers, ensuring high quality support, value for money and alignment with Itad's operating model.

Strategic development, governance and continuous improvement of Itad's GSS framework

Working with Itad's retained security advisers, the GSS Manager is responsible for ensuring the Safety & Security framework remains current, proportionate and effective, including alignment with safeguarding requirements and wider duty of care obligations. The role translates Itad’s agreed risk appetite into practical policies, procedures, guidance and tools that can be used consistently across project delivery.

The role works closely with Practices and support functions to build organisational capability through guidance, training, inductions and practical tools. It ensures that safety and security responsibilities, accountabilities and decision making requirements are clearly understood by staff, partners and suppliers, and that the framework supports effective and timely delivery.

Governance, risk oversight and evolution of Itad's risk appetite

The GSS Manager monitors travel and deployment activity against Itad's risk appetite, supported by external security advisers and reporting through the Audit, Risk and Resilience Committee. This includes maintaining country risk assessments, monitoring emerging risks and turning organisational risk appetite into clear operational decisions, thresholds and escalation routes for different types of deployment.

The role chairs the Travel, Safety and Security Committee, facilitating decisions on mitigation measures, travel to high risk locations and support arrangements for national consultants. The GSS Manager is responsible for maintaining and evolving Itad's risk appetite framework and ensuring the Crisis Management Team remains appropriately prepared, trained and equipped to respond to incidents and crises.

Leadership and management of the GSS team

The GSS Manager is responsible for ensuring the GSS team is appropriately resourced, capable and equipped to meet organisational requirements. This includes business planning, workload management, capability development and continuous improvement of the service provided across the organisation. The role works closely with Safeguarding and Supplier Management teams to ensure a coordinated approach to duty of care, risk management and support for staff, partners and suppliers.

The role oversees Itad's Duty Officer rota, ensuring adequate coverage, capability and resilience across the team, whilst also undertaking Duty Officer responsibilities as required. The GSS Manager contributes to the leadership and development of the wider function, promoting collaboration across Practices and support functions, including Safeguarding and Supplier Management, and supporting succession planning and professional development opportunities for team members.

Professional Expertise & Key Competencies

To be successful in this role, you will have significant experience in safety, security and risk management within an international organisation. You will be a collaborative leader with strong judgement, excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to balance operational requirements with duty of care obligations in a complex and evolving environment.

In addition, you will have:

• Significant experience leading safety, security and travel risk management within a global organisation, ideally including operations in fragile, conflict affected or higher risk environments.
• Experience developing and implementing organisational frameworks, policies, governance arrangements and risk management processes relating to safety, security and duty of care.
• Strong risk management, decision making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex situations and recommend proportionate mitigations.
• Experience operating in a matrix environment, influencing stakeholders and building trusted relationships where there is limited or no direct authority.
• Strong leadership and people management skills, including workforce planning, capability development, succession planning and team leadership.
• Experience working across organisational functions and governance structures, including senior committees, project delivery teams, safeguarding, supplier management and operational support functions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, commercial awareness, and a practical, solutions focused approach to balancing risk, operational delivery and organisational objectives.
