About the Role
Help us make the most of our Google Ad Grant. We’re a small UK charity supporting the Happy House Children’s Home in Watamu, Kenya and need a Google Ads volunteer to help us build an effective strategy, reach new supporters and turn our free advertising allowance into real impact.
What difference will you make?
As a small charity, reaching new supporters is incredibly important to us. We have been fortunate to receive a Google Ad Grant, giving us access to advertising that would otherwise be well beyond our marketing budget. The challenge is that we currently lack the specialist knowledge to make the most of it.
By helping us reach people who are genuinely interested in our work whether that is tourists already visiting Watamu, people considering sponsoring a child, potential donors or others looking to support a children’s charity, you could help introduce Happy House to an entirely new audience.
A successful campaign could lead to more visitors, sponsors and supporters, providing sustainable income that directly supports the children and young people in our care.
Just as importantly, we would like this project to leave us with a better understanding of Google Ads so that we can continue building on the volunteer’s work in the future.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for someone who understands Google Ads and can help us turn our Google Ad Grant into something that genuinely benefits our charity.
The most important thing for us is practical experience of Google Ads. Experience specifically with Google Ad Grants would be fantastic, but it isn’t essential if you have strong Google Ads knowledge and are willing to understand the requirements of the grant.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Ideally, you will have experience in some of the following areas
- Setting up and managing Google Ads search campaigns
- Keyword research and identifying new audiences
- Writing effective search adverts
- Google Ad Grants and their requirements
- Conversion tracking and Google Analytics
- Reviewing campaign performance and making improvements
- Digital marketing strategy
- Charity, fundraising or tourism marketing
We would particularly value someone who is willing to think creatively about how we can use the grant. We have ideas, including reaching tourists visiting Watamu and encouraging them to visit Happy House, but we don’t necessarily know if this is the best approach. We would like someone who can challenge our thinking, look at the data and help us identify where the greatest opportunities are.
As we are starting with very limited Google Ads knowledge, we’re also looking for someone who can explain things simply and help us understand what they are doing rather than just setting everything up and disappearing!
You don’t need to know everything. If you have solid Google Ads experience, enthusiasm for using your skills for a good cause and would enjoy helping a small charity make much better use of an opportunity we already have, we would love to hear from you.

What will you be doing?
We are looking for someone with Google Ads experience who can help us make effective use of our Google Ad Grant.
We already have the grant in place, but Google Ads is completely new to us and we need someone who can help us understand the best way to use it, set up effective campaigns and make sure we are reaching the right people.

One idea we are particularly interested in exploring is targeting tourists who are already visiting Watamu, Kenya, and searching for things to do locally. Our Happy House Children’s Home is based in Watamu and welcomes visitors. We feel that encouraging people to come and see Happy House for themselves could be a powerful way of introducing new people to our work and potentially developing longer-term supporters.
However, this is only our starting idea. We would really value someone who can look at our charity, our audiences and the opportunities available through Google Ads and advise us on what is most likely to work.
We would like the volunteer to help with
- Reviewing our existing Google Ad Grant account
- Researching keywords and potential audiences
- Exploring local/tourism-focused campaigns around Watamu
- Identifying opportunities to promote child sponsorship and donations
- Creating and setting up campaigns and adverts
- Making sure campaigns meet Google Ad Grant requirements
- Setting up appropriate conversion tracking
- Reviewing performance and helping us understand what is working
- Giving us some simple guidance so we can continue managing the account afterwards
We are a small charity, so this is an opportunity for someone to have a real influence rather than simply manage an established advertising programme. We are very open to ideas and would be happy to follow the volunteer’s recommendations on where our Google Ad Grant could have the greatest impact.
“It took my CV and asked me questions relevant to understanding what kind of jobs to suggest for me. Suggestions were almost perfect. Jobs were exactly what I’ve been looking for.”
