UKGI has a trusted place as the government’s centre of expertise in corporate governance and corporate finance. We get to work with many different government departments (such as HM Treasury, Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero and Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade) delivering outcomes that support some of the governments biggest priorities. This is your chance to join an organisation that has a unique insight and exposure across government, and to really make a difference in a graduate role.
This is a 12-month graduate placement based in our brand-new Leeds office during which you will gain experience across UKGI’s different areas of expertise. You will rotate your time across business areas, giving you broad exposure to the many ways UKGI supports government, and the chance to meet and collaborate with many people not just within UKGI, but across numerous departments.
Teams you may be placed in include:
- Corporate Governance: This is where UKGI acts as a shareholder representative for, and leads the establishment of, the government's most complex and commercial organisations, such as the National Wealth Fund and British Business Bank.
- Corporate Finance: The team advises on major UK government corporate finance matters including financial interventions, financial transactions and corporate finance negotiations.
- FInTAG: Who analyse the UK Government’s (over £15bn) financial assets and liabilities as well as advising on financial instruments, guarantees and complex transactions.
- Data & Analytics: Help to drive adoption of AI across UKGI as well as the use of data to generate insight, improve reporting and support better decision-making.
- Corporate Services: Who keep UKGI running effectively through people, finance, operations, communications and business support.

You will be involved in varied, hands-on work: perhaps supporting with advice to ministers and senior officials, preparing for meetings with senior teams, reviewing board and performance information and helping teams develop best practice. No two days will be the same, and the placement will be shaped around both UKGI’s business needs and your future development and career interests.
Our main aim throughout will be to provide you with a bespoke learning and development programme, with structured induction, regular feedback, and opportunities to meet and learn from senior people across the organisation. You will also have a buddy and mentor to help you settle into the role, as well as the support of a collaborative and friendly team of circa 150 colleagues. By the end of the programme, you will have developed a broad understanding of UKGI, built transferable workplace skills, and gained the confidence to pursue a career in either the public or private sector.
About You
You will:
- Be educated to degree level
- Have an interest in working for government and enthusiasm for doing work that can make a real impact to society
- Be a proactive individual who can learn quickly and manage multiple projects at once
- Be able to quickly assimilate a range of guidance and evidence, analyse, and think creatively about problems
- Be able to communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders and work collaboratively within a team
- Be able to demonstrate excellent written ability
- Be able to demonstrate that you are a competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Have attention to detail and enjoy solving day-to-day issues

Location:
This role will be based in our Leeds office, conveniently located an eight-minute walk from the train station. The role will also involve regular travel to London, arranged flexibly, with expenses paid.
In line with company policy, we will be employing a hybrid working model based, with 40% of your time being home-based.
