The Role
As a Graduate Applied Acoustic Physicist, you will be contributing your technical skills to major maritime platform designs by helping to ensure they are acoustically stealthy.
Day-to-day, you’ll work as part of a close-knit team who in turn work as part of a larger team of teams delivering complex technical multi-disciplinary work that supports major maritime projects. The work will involve the design and conduct of trials and measurements in unique experimental and manufacturing facilities and numerical modelling using dedicated high-performance computing facilities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting aspects of practical experiments, measurements and data analysis
- Conducting aspects of numerical modelling and theoretical tasks
- Contributing to the design of test items and experimental procedures
- Writing contributions for technical reports on work you have conducted
- Delivery of your work, presenting elements to customers and stakeholders
- Commitment to your own development and corporate policies, notably health & safety and security
Essential experience of the Graduate Applied Acoustic Physicist:
- Experimental aptitude and skills relevant to acoustics, noise, vibration and flow measurements
- Awareness of marine propulsion and/or turbo-machinery design / technology
- Numerical computing skills, e.g. MATLAB, python, COMSOL, CFD, FEA
- Practical engineering skills aligned with design and manufacture
- Project management and delivery skills
- Working as a multidisciplinary team member

Essential qualifications for the Graduate Applied Acoustic Physicist:
- A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant STEM subject area, e.g. Acoustics, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or another appropriate applied physical science discipline

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Haslar site with a minimum average site attendance of three days per week.
Our facilities at the Haslar Marine Technology Park are state-of-the-art, including our ocean basin rotating arm, and marine towing tank, offering an unparalleled environment for testing and refining designs. Our marine technology offers our global customers a service to deliver constrained hydrodynamic model tests of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.
Please note that all applicants for this role must be eligible for SC clearance, as a minimum.
