Qioptiq designs and manufactures market leading Optronic solutions for Defense & Aerospace applications. Key markets include head up displays for commercial airliners, helmet mounted displays for 4th & 5th generation fast jet platforms, night vision for the dismounted soldier, and advanced electro-optics for airborne, maritime and vehicle platforms. Our diverse product range are enabled by the development and application of innovative technologies and engineering solutions. To further expand our portfolio Qioptiq is seeking an exceptional individual to develop and deliver our next-generation products and technologies.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Graduate Optical Coating Development Engineer to join our coating development team at our St Asaph site. In this role you will gain the skills required for the design, development and manufacture of optical coatings for a very wide range of optical systems, covering wavebands from the ultraviolet to far infrared. We will provide a supportive environment where you will be mentored by senior engineers to quickly gain experience in all stages of the coating development process. You will learn to design optical thin film coatings using specialist software to implement theoretical concepts and various design techniques. You will learn to use our state-of-the-art coating machines to develop coating processes and manufacture your own coating designs. You will assess the optical and environmental performance of these coatings using spectrophotometers and environmental test chambers.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop and manufacture optical thin film coatings to meet customer and internal specifications.
- Support of existing coating processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Review coating requirements for new product introduction, working closely with the optical design team.
- Generate technical documentation to support the manufacture and quality control of coatings.
- Deliver coating development projects to expand our capability and explore new applications.
- Identify new coating techniques and technologies to support the coating technology roadmap.
- Carry out measurement, analysis and qualification testing on coating samples.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree (masters preferred) in physics, chemistry, materials science or other relevant discipline.
- Clear technical communication skills including logbooks, presentations and report writing.
- Creative approach to problem solving.
- Good software skills and able to learn new software quickly.
- Adept using Microsoft Excel including mathematical formulas and plotting graphs.
- Confident with practical hands-on work and use-of machinery and equipment.

Desirable
- Specific knowledge of optics or thin film coating would be a considerable advantage.
- Ability to write code for simple computer programs and scripts would be useful.
- Experience using analytical techniques and equipment such as electron microscopes, optical microscopes, interferometers or spectrometers.
- Experience using computer-controlled machinery and equipment.
