Job Description Summary
At GE Vernova – Grid Automation, we develop innovative solutions to help utilities and industries manage their electrical networks reliably and efficiently. Our Protection & Control (P&C) team plays a critical role in designing and delivering intelligent systems that ensure power system stability and security.
As part of GE Vernova’s Graduate Engineering Programme, you will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, learn from experienced professionals, and contribute to the advancement of substation automation, protection systems, and grid resilience technologies.
Job Summary
This graduate role is ideal for someone passionate about electrical engineering and looking to grow a career in substation protection and control systems. You will gain hands-on experience in designing, configuring and testing protection and control solutions for different voltage level substations.
You’ll be mentored by experienced engineers and will rotate through various teams within Grid Automation to build a strong technical foundation in substation automation, SCADA systems, communication protocols (IEC 61850), and cybersecurity.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the design and configuration of protection and control systems for electrical substations
- Support testing activities, including factory acceptance tests.
- Gain exposure to SCADA, RTU, HMI systems, and protection relays.
- Learn and apply IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus and other communication protocols.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product engineering, applications, and field services.
- Support documentation development, including system specifications, test procedures, and technical reports.
- Engage in continuous learning, attend training sessions, and contribute to technical innovation.
- Work closely with project and delivery teams to ensure high-quality solutions aligned with customer needs.
Essential Qualifications
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of protection schemes, relay logic, and control system principles.
- Familiarity with power system fundamentals, substation layouts, or single line diagrams.
- Knowledge of or interest in SCADA/DCS systems, industrial communications, or cybersecurity in energy systems.
- Competence in tools such as Python, MATLAB, or AutoCAD is a plus.
- Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Right to work in the UK.
