Job Description

Our Ground Engineering team in the United Kingdom and Ireland (UK&I) comprises 150 professionals who provide a comprehensive range of services, including project management, feasibility studies, ground investigation design and interpretation, detailed design, contract administration, and construction supervision. We work on ground engineering projects across the UK&I and internationally, supporting both internal and external clients. Our primary focus areas include energy, water, nuclear (decommissioning and new build), power, road and rail, aviation, ports and harbours, as well as commercial and industrial developments, and landslip investigation and remediation.

We work for leading UK and International clients, including National Grid, BP, Sellafield, Associated British Ports, Transport Scotland, National Highways, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, Network Rail, and local authorities, as well as for prominent contractors and developers. Our impressive portfolio features a range of regional and national projects, such as the Great Grid Upgrade, STEP Fusion, pumped storage hydro projects in the Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia VIP, A83 Rest and be Thankful, M54-M6 Link Road, water schemes for various water utilities clients (UK&I) and HMNB Devonport redevelopment. Additionally, we are involved in overseas projects such as Eastlink in Sweden.

Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology graduates at AECOM will work on a range of projects, involving work such as:

  • Desk studies, site inspections, rockface surveys and geomorphological mapping.
  • Design, planning and procurement of ground investigations.
  • Supervision of ground investigation fieldwork.
  • Geological interpretation and preparation of interpretative reports.
  • Analysis of geotechnical data, preparation of ground models, design and reporting of ground engineering solutions, including foundations, retaining walls, soil slope stability, earthworks and rock slope stabilisation measures.
  • Use of cutting-edge digital software, including Openground for ground investigation data management and Leapfrog for 3D geological modelling.
  • Access to a range of 2D and 3D numerical analysis software packages, with opportunities for candidates interested in developing analysis and modelling skills.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology/Geology, with a 2:1 classification (or equivalent) or higher.
  • An MSc/MEng in Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential, and competent use of AutoCAD/Civil 3D software is desirable.
  • Candidates with prior ground engineering work experience are preferred, though this is not essential.
  • Willingness and ability to work towards professional qualifications through the ICE, IOM3 or The Geological Society.
  • Demonstrated interest in ground engineering projects and in promoting ground engineering activities with clients.
  • Flexibility to work away from home on sites and occasionally in other offices.
  • Full UK driving license preferred.
  • Motivated to meet client and business expectations, with an understanding of the wider financial and commercial implications of project delivery.
  • Effective communicator with colleagues, internal / external clients, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to structure and prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team.
  • Capacity to work independently without losing initiative and focus.

In addition to the GDP, we enrol all our Ground Engineering Graduates in GEO Grounding, our in-house technical training academy, which focuses on a series of modules including Desk Study, Geological Interpretation and Geomorphology, Ground Investigation (Design and Site Supervision), Ground Model Development, Parametric Assessment and Geotechnical Design. GEO Grounding comprises module attendance followed by trainer-student discussion workshops to enhance learning.
