Graduate Leadership Trainee
Leadership begins long before someone receives authority over a team. It appears in how they prepare, communicate expectations, respond to pressure and help other people perform consistently. The Graduate Leadership Trainee programme is designed for graduates who want to build those habits through practical responsibility and understand what effective management looks like from the inside.
Sage welcomes graduates from every subject area. Relevant evidence may come from a university project, previous employment, volunteering, sport, caring responsibilities or involvement in a society. Formal management experience is not expected. We are interested in how you organise people and information, how you influence an outcome and whether you can learn without becoming defensive.
This is a full-time, on-site opportunity operating Monday to Friday. Expected earnings during year one are £45,000. This figure is performance dependent and must not be interpreted as a guaranteed salary. The guaranteed and variable elements will be explained during the recruitment process before any offer is accepted.
Leadership foundation: personal credibility
The first part of development is learning how Sage delivers campaigns for its clients. You will understand the campaign objective, customer proposition, expected standards and reporting process. You will also participate in face-to-face campaign activity so that future decisions are grounded in genuine operational knowledge.
This customer-facing element is one part of the programme. Its purpose is to build communication, commercial awareness and first-hand understanding of the work you may later help coordinate. You will be expected to represent information accurately, work towards agreed outcomes and maintain reliable records.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Personal credibility means arriving prepared, applying feedback and producing a standard that another person could reasonably follow. Before supporting anyone else, you need to show that you understand the task and can explain why a particular approach works.
People development: supporting performance
As your capability grows, you may begin observing how experienced leaders structure briefings, explain expectations and respond when performance changes. Under guidance, you could help a newer colleague understand an approved process, prepare part of a team session or share constructive feedback based on something you have observed.
You will learn that coaching is not simply encouragement. It involves identifying a specific behaviour, explaining its impact and agreeing an action that can be reviewed. You will practise adapting your communication to different levels of confidence and experience while recognising when an issue needs to be handled by an authorised manager.
You will not begin the programme with hiring authority, disciplinary responsibility or independent control of a team. Leadership responsibility increases only when your own conduct, judgement and results demonstrate readiness.
Business awareness: seeing the wider operation
The programme can introduce you to the decisions surrounding campaign delivery. This may include how managers interpret performance information, plan daily coverage, prepare client updates and allocate attention across competing priorities. You may also observe how recruitment supports growth and how onboarding, compliance checks and team retention affect the stability of an operation.

As you progress, exposure may extend to basic commercial forecasting, campaign planning and the principles behind resource or budget decisions. Exposure does not mean independent authority. Client agreements, financial commitments, employment decisions and legal matters remain with the appropriately authorised people. This distinction is important. The pathway is intended to teach responsible leadership rather than create an inflated title without substance.
The evidence that moves you forward
Progress is reviewed through a combination of personal performance, communication quality, reliability, judgement and contribution to other people. One strong week will not automatically create a promotion, just as one difficult week will not define your potential. We will look for consistent evidence that you can understand a standard, deliver it and gradually help others do the same.
Strong trainees ask useful questions, admit mistakes early and can separate evidence from assumption. They understand that trust is earned through follow-through. They also remain ambitious without treating development as an entitlement.
Attach your CV and confirm your availability through LinkedIn. Describe one situation where you helped a group, project or individual move towards a shared result. Tell us what needed to happen, how you influenced the people involved and what you would do differently now.
