The Role
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Associate, depending on knowledge, skills and experience, to support the work of Dr Katie Young. The successful applicant will work with a range of large, complex real-world electronic health datasets (e.g. CPRD) to define key diabetes phenotypes and cohorts. This will include the opportunity to work across the new regional NHS Secure Data Environment network, a major national infrastructure for enabling secure access to NHS data for research. They will also have opportunities to use these data to address clinically important questions in diabetes research with a particular focus on precision diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
The post will include managing, curating and processing large-scale health data, developing robust and reproducible data processing pipelines, and defining and validating clinical phenotypes, all building on our established data processing infrastructure and pipelines (https://github.com/Exeter-Diabetes). The post will also include some statistical analysis and opportunities to contribute to the interpretation and communication of research findings.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
