The Role
We are looking for a curious and capable Graduate Software Engineer who wants to work on real production systems with experienced engineers and modern AI-assisted development tools. This is not a narrow backend role: you will build depth while gaining experience across application code, APIs, event-driven systems, testing, cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability, security, and production support.
You will benefit from strong peer mentorship through pairing, code review, and regular technical feedback. We put a strong emphasis on collaboration, ensuring senior engineers help develop less experienced colleagues. Our “you build it, you run it” approach means you will own all software & infrastructure you create, taking greater ownership with the team’s support as time goes on.

You will help evolve a substantial platform, creating excellent buy-to-let mortgage experiences and internal tools for lending, finance, and servicing. The work can simplify applications, improve automated decisioning, strengthen financial controls, and support borrowers through thoughtful integration and automation.
Our Java and Spring Boot platform runs on AWS with Docker, EKS/Kubernetes, FluxCD, Helm, infrastructure as code, Kafka, OpenSearch, MariaDB/RDS, REST APIs, GitLab CI/CD, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana Cloud. We take every opportunity to simplify our microservice platform to ensure we remain nimble at all times and can deliver at pace to the business. You are not expected to know this stack on day one.
You will learn to use AI coding tools and agents for understanding code, designing changes, improving tests, investigating failures, and refactoring. Over time, you are also likely to contribute to projects integrating AI models into our platform to reduce manual work and make complex information easier to use. AI increases what a good engineer can accomplish; it does not replace judgment, debugging, testing, security, privacy, or responsibility for production code.
Skills & Experience
We value strong foundations, analytical ability, and applied learning. Degree work, placements, internships, open-source contributions, and substantial personal or team projects help evidence these.
Essential
- Good practical Java experience from degree work, a placement, internship, or substantial project, including object-oriented programming, collections, exceptions, and readable code.
- Comfort with everyday Git: commits, branches, merges, and straightforward conflict resolution.
- Basic Linux command-line and shell scripting, including files, pipes, redirection, processes, environment variables, and simple automation.
- Sound foundations in data structures, algorithms, testing, relational databases, networking, HTTP, and REST APIs.
- Experience designing, building, and testing a meaningful software project, and explaining its decisions and trade-offs.
- Methodical problem-solving and debugging.
- Curiosity about how complex systems are designed, maintained, and developed further.
- A collaborative approach: asking questions, sharing ideas, and being receptive to feedback so that you and the wider team are constantly striving for excellence.

Useful to have encountered
- Experience with any of the following is helpful, but not required:
- Spring Boot, contract-first APIs, build tools, and wider automated testing.
- GitLab/CI/CD, Docker, cloud platforms, Kubernetes, or infrastructure as code.
- Event-driven systems, search technology, relational databases, or observability.
- AI-assisted development tools or coding agents.
Location & Logistics
Position is based in Victoria, central London, reporting to one of the teams’ senior Scrum Masters.
