They should be motivated by using data to answer business questions, building tools and dashboards that improve decision-making, understanding business performance and contributing to projects that improve how Finance operates.

- Strong academic background, ideally a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, Mathematics, Data Analytics, Computer Science or another analytical/numerate discipline
- A clear desire to build a long-term career in finance, FP&A or strategic/commercial finance
- Commitment to studying towards the CIMA professional qualification as part of the graduate programme
- Strong numerical and analytical capability, with the ability to interpret data and identify the key messages behind the numbers
- Strong interest in the intersection of finance, data and technology

- Genuine interest in AI and emerging technologies, particularly how they can be applied to finance, analysis, reporting and process improvement
- Commercial curiosity and an interest in understanding how businesses operate, make money and make strategic decisions
- Ability to communicate analysis clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Strong attention to detail while also being able to understand the wider commercial picture
- Proactive, inquisitive and comfortable asking questions, challenging assumptions and learning new systems and concepts
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work across both recurring finance activities and project-based work
- Collaborative approach and confidence working with colleagues across Finance, Technology and the wider business

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
