The Opportunity
We are working with an established St. James’s Place Partner Practice in Hartley Wintney that is looking to add a Trainee Paraplanner to its growing Paraplanning team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or someone looking to start a career in financial services and develop into a professional Paraplanner.
The practice is particularly interested in candidates who are new to financial services or early in their career, as they are able to provide comprehensive training and develop the successful candidate from the ground up.
Previous experience as a Paraplanner or Administrator within another IFA or financial advice business is not essential. In fact, candidates without established processes from other firms may be particularly well suited to the role, as they can be trained directly in the practice's systems and the St. James’s Place approach.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Paraplanner, you will work closely with Financial Advisers and the wider Paraplanning team to support the delivery of high-quality financial advice.
Your responsibilities will develop as your knowledge and experience grows and may include:
- Assisting with the preparation of financial advice documentation.
- Supporting Financial Advisers with research and technical administration.
- Preparing and maintaining client information and records.
- Assisting with suitability reports and recommendations.
- Carrying out research into financial products and investments.
- Supporting cashflow modelling and financial planning analysis.
- Assisting with pension and investment-related research.
- Preparing information and documentation for adviser meetings.
- Liaising with providers and other relevant parties.
- Ensuring client files and documentation are accurate and maintained to a high standard.
- Learning and following the practice's established processes and the St. James’s Place way of working.
- Progressively taking on more technical Paraplanning responsibilities as your knowledge develops.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
