You will work within the busy Event Management Team who support both internal and external clients. The team sits within Conferences & Events (C&E). C&E sells and delivers a vast number of conferences and events to underpin academic work, support the student experience and drive additional income. As with any commercial revenue generating department within a university, C&E seeks to strike a balance between enhancing the student and staff experience and ensuring a financial return to the University.
Role Summary
As a Graphic Designer at the University of Birmingham you will be an integral part of the Conference & Events team, specifically within the Event Management Team. Your role will involve creating a variety of engaging online and offline design materials that contribute to our Conference & Events offerings. While you will primarily collaborate with the Event Management Team, you will also have a secondary alignment with the Campus Services Marketing & Communications team. This arrangement will enable you to benefit from functional coordination, fostering joint upskilling, learning, and development opportunities alongside the central design team. You will also have the chance to contribute your design expertise to both event delivery and marketing & communications functions as business demands dictate.
Main Duties
- Produce visually appealing online and offline collateral to effectively support the objectives of the Conference & Events team.
- Work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects to create assets such as event websites, abstracts books, event guides, programmes, presentation templates, bid proposals, seating plans, posters, pull-up banners, and various online materials such as event logos and web and email banners.
- Producing high-quality, accurate final files to print and digital specifications, including checking proofs, archiving and filing to the server on a daily basis.
- Utilise your understanding of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) principles to provide insights and recommendations aimed at improving the user journey across our materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure, where applicable, that your designs align with overarching University branding and objectives.
- As a technical expert, advise on all areas of design, including scoping projects, equipment, software, and feeding into the review and enhancement of production and working processes.
- Liaising with external parties, such as printers, to ensure that a project runs smoothly, and a client’s expectations are met.
- Researching and reviewing market trends with regards to design.
- Working with internal teams to measure the effectiveness of design work.
- Support the design team with the production of other assets across Campus Services as and when required.

- Providing support for manager(s) in promoting sustainability across the University.
- Supporting equality and values diversity, moderates own behaviour to avoid unfair discriminatory impact or bias on others.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

- Educated to A Level standard, or equivalent level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 NVQ, or level 3 national diploma or relevant work experience evidencing the skills and ability to undertake the role.
- Minimum of grade C/4 in Mathematics and English at GCSE or equivalent level 2 qualifications.
- Professional experience in a Design and/or Marketing role.
- Highly proficient IT skills, including the MS Office and website editing software. You should be confident and able to quickly learn new IT skills and software packages as required.
- Extensive practical experience using industry-standard packages, including Adobe Creative Cloud, Aftereffects, InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Premier Pro, Acrobat, and Presentation software, as well as Microsoft Office/PowerPoint to create, edit, and post-produce content and assets.
- A thorough understanding of graphic design, typography, and digital standards.
- An understanding of event CMS platforms such as EventsAir is desirable.
- A solid understanding of UX and UI principles, enabling you to offer informed recommendations for enhancing the user experience.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders across the University and externally.
- A proactive approach to staying updated with design trends and industry advancements to ensure that your work remains fresh, innovative, and aligned with best practices.
- An understanding of print and print specifications, proven ability to plan ahead and anticipate requirements, proactively planning own (and sometimes others’ workloads) to manage time effectively, progress tasks concurrently, and work to deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. You must inspire confidence and command authority with a range of colleagues and provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Ability to work effectively in a large, complex organisation, and to develop a good understanding of how the University and higher education institutions work.
- Ability to understand policy and procedures and how to apply these.
- Understands the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace.
