GRCS Assistant Manager - IGH (Manchester)

About the role

This role sits within Advisory, where multidisciplinary teams bring together sector knowledge and specialist expertise to help clients respond to complex challenges, strengthen resilience, support growth and create lasting value.

Governance, Risk and Compliance Services provides internal audit, grants assurance, internal control, corporate governance and risk management services across public and private sector clients.

You will have opportunities to work across a varied portfolio. Depending on your experience and interests, this may include grant reviews and assurance, outsourced or co-sourced internal audit, assurance mapping, annual audit planning, risk and control reviews, process improvement, corporate governance reviews, contract compliance and related advisory work.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Manage and deliver individual assignments and programmes of internal audit or grants assurance work, covering planning, fieldwork oversight, quality assurance, reporting and follow-up.
  • Build effective day-to-day relationships with client stakeholders, KPMG colleagues, KPMG Global Services teams and specialist contributors, supporting consistent delivery across a portfolio of engagements.
  • Develop audit approaches and plans that address client risks, governance, controls and project requirements, and deliver work in line with relevant professional standards and KPMG methodology.
  • Review audit evidence and reports for quality and sufficiency, communicate findings clearly with clients, and escalate significant matters to managers, directors or partners as appropriate.
  • Support engagement management by setting and monitoring budgets, controlling work in progress, supporting timely billing and identifying appropriate additional opportunities to help clients.
  • Coordinate people and specialist resources to meet delivery requirements, provide coaching and training, and support colleagues with clear objectives and constructive feedback.
  • Keep up to date with legal, regulatory, governance, risk management, auditing, accounting and financial reporting developments relevant to clients, including applicable grant assurance requirements.
  • Contribute to business development by identifying opportunities, drafting tender responses and supporting client proposals and presentations.

Experience and skills needed

  • Experience delivering audit or assurance assignments, including overseeing fieldwork, reviewing evidence and contributing to clear, effective reports.
  • Strong understanding of business risks, processes and controls, with the ability to apply this knowledge to internal audit, assurance or related advisory work.
  • Experience acting as a main or secondary client contact and managing day-to-day relationships with senior finance or equivalent stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, including planning work, coordinating resources, monitoring delivery and managing competing priorities.
  • Experience in the public sector, private sector or professional services, with the ability to understand client context and apply relevant industry knowledge.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including explaining findings, facilitating discussions and producing high-quality reports or client deliverables.

Qualifications required

A relevant professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors, a Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies member organisation, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, or an equivalent recognised professional body.
