Job Summary
The Ground Engineering Flight Ramp Team (Mechanical) is responsible for the delivery of Airfield Support Equipment (ASE) maintenance, first-line rectification, and fleet support activities across RAF Waddington. The team conducts scheduled and ad hoc maintenance, equipment inspections, collections and deliveries to ensure ASE remains safe, serviceable and available to support flying operations. Personnel are responsible for accurate maintenance recording, maintaining high standards of safety, environmental compliance and quality management, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering environment.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Part time and job share arrangements may be considered providing that full time hours are covered.
Job Description
Reporting to:
Officer Commanding Ground Engineering Flight through the relevant Trade Manager and Airfield Support Equipment Controller. Day-to-day controlled by SNCO IC GEF Control or Deputy.
Purpose Of The Role:
To maintain the operational readiness and serviceability of Airfield Support Equipment (ASE) across RAF Waddington by conducting scheduled maintenance, first-line rectification, inspections, equipment movements and technical support activities in accordance with authorised engineering policy and maintenance documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Engineering Support
- Conduct As Required Servicing (ARS) on ASE in accordance with approved maintenance schedules and technical publications.
- Carry out first-line rectification of ASE and complete simple repairs on site where authorised.
- Identify and report defects, ensuring unserviceable equipment is appropriately labelled and managed.
- Complete weekly inspections and inventory checks when directed.
- Support ASE collection, delivery and movement tasks across station units.
Engineering Governance
- Record all maintenance activity, servicing, inspections and repairs on JAMES.
- Raise and complete Maintenance Work Orders (MWOs) as required.
- Maintain accurate records relating to fuels, oils, locations and equipment servicing data.
- Ensure compliance with engineering orders, maintenance documentation and local operating procedures.
Operational Support
- Liaise with flying squadrons, line controllers and maintenance organisations regarding ASE availability and serviceability.
- Provide daily updates and end-of-shift handovers to GEF Control.
- Support priority and ad hoc engineering taskings as directed.
- Maintain readiness to support station operations and flying activity requirements.
Vehicle and Equipment Management
- Operate and maintain allocated Ramp Team vehicles.
- Ensure vehicles remain clean, serviceable, refuelled and FOD free.
- Safeguard duty mobile phones and engineering equipment.
- Manage replenishment fluids and consumables appropriately.
Safety, Compliance and Assurance
- Adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental Protection policies and procedures.
- Comply with COSHH requirements, risk assessments and PPE directives.
- Maintain tool control and engineering housekeeping standards.
- Operate safely within aircraft manoeuvring areas and other controlled environments.
- Report accidents, near misses, defects and vehicle damage promptly.
- Contribute actively to quality assurance, continuous improvement and 6S initiatives.
Knowledge And Experience Required
- Competence and authorisation in the operation and maintenance of relevant ASE.
- Understanding of engineering maintenance procedures and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of JAMES maintenance recording processes.
- Familiarity with tool control, COSHH management and engineering safety procedures.
- Ability to work effectively within a mixed Mechanical and Electrical maintenance team.

Working Pattern
- Monday to Thursday: 0745 to 1600 hrs.
- Friday: 0745 to 1200 hrs.
- Daily liaison and debrief with GEF Control required.

Experience
Essential Criteria
The Successful Candidate Will Be Able To Demonstrate:
- Experience of carrying out maintenance, servicing, inspection or rectification activities in an engineering or technical environment.
- Experience of using technical publications, maintenance schedules and engineering procedures to complete maintenance tasks safely and accurately.
- Experience of maintaining accurate records and documentation relating to engineering or equipment management activities.
- Experience of working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve operational outputs.
- Experience of operating within a regulated environment where safety, quality and compliance are critical.
Technical / Professional Skills
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Knowledge of engineering maintenance principles and fault rectification techniques.
- Understanding of Health & Safety legislation, risk management and safe systems of work.
- Knowledge Of COSHH Requirements And Environmental Protection Responsibilities.
- Ability to interpret technical instructions and maintenance documentation.
- Competence in the use of engineering tools, equipment and workshop practices.
Qualifications
Desirable:
- Recognised apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, ONC/OND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or substantial equivalent experience).
- UK military trade qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- IOSH Working Safely or equivalent.
- Driving licence suitable for operating fleet vehicles.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.

- Candidates will also undertake a technical assessment designed to evaluate their engineering knowledge, fault-finding ability, safety awareness and understanding of maintenance procedures relevant to Airfield Support Equipment (ASE) maintenance activities.
