Grounds Maintenance Operative
Job Purpose
To undertake a wide range of grounds maintenance and environmental services activities, ensuring parks, open spaces, sports facilities, landscaped areas, and public spaces are maintained to a high standard. The post holder will deliver frontline operational services that contribute to a clean, safe, and attractive environment for residents and visitors while working in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation and service standards.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance Operations
- Carry out general grounds maintenance duties including grass cutting, mowing, strimming, hedge trimming, pruning, edging, weeding, planting, and landscaping activities.
- Undertake sports pitch marking and maintenance duties as required.
- Complete litter picking, bin emptying, site inspections, and environmental maintenance tasks.
- Operate a range of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment, including strimmers, pedestrian mowers, and ride-on mowers where trained and authorised.
- Maintain parks, playing fields, open spaces, and landscaped areas to a high standard.
- Complete daily work records accurately using manual or electronic systems.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to Health and Safety legislation, risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work.
- Wear and maintain the appropriate uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for the role.
- Undertake daily vehicle, machinery, and equipment inspections and report defects promptly.
- Ensure all tools, machinery, and vehicles are maintained in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
- Identify and report hazards, risks, and unsafe working practices.

- Deliver a professional and courteous service when interacting with residents, colleagues, contractors, and members of the public.
- Work collaboratively as part of an operational team to maintain service standards.
- Support service improvements and contribute positively to the achievement of team objectives.
- Undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the role as required.
Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, landscaping, or a similar outdoor environment.
- Experience using strimmers and pedestrian mowers.
- Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements within an operational environment.
- Experience working effectively as part of a team.
Desirable
- Experience operating ride-on mowers.
- Experience in sports pitch maintenance and line marking.
- Experience working within local authority or public realm services.
- Knowledge of horticultural practices and grounds care techniques.
Qualifications
Essential
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Relevant practical grounds maintenance, landscaping, or horticultural experience.

Desirable
- NVQ Level 1 or above in Amenity Horticulture, Landscaping, or a related discipline.
- Relevant grounds maintenance, horticultural, or machinery operation qualifications.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques and the safe use of equipment.
- Basic understanding of Health and Safety at Work legislation.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding outdoor work.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic IT skills for completing records and work-related documentation.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
Additional Information
- Location: Kidderminster
- Pay Rate: £13.88 per hour PAYE
- Umbrella Rate: £16.92 per hour
- Hours: 37 hours per week
- Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm
- Weekend Working: Occasional weekend cover may be required
- Driving Requirement: Full UK Driving Licence essential
- Equipment Experience: Experience using strimmers and pedestrian mowers is essential; experience operating ride-on mowers is highly desirable
- Working Environment: Outdoor role requiring work in all weather conditions and a good level of physical fitness
- Contract Type: Full-time temporary assignment
- Payment Schedule: Bi-weekly
