Grounds Maintenance Operative

Location

HMP Wakefield, Love Lane, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 9AG

Salary

The base salary is £27,426, plus a weekend rota allowance. There will be a requirement to work 1 in 4 weekends on a rota basis, with an additional allowance of 15% of basic salary.

Working Hours

The standard hours of work are 39 hours per week:

  • Monday to Friday: 07:30 - 16:15
  • Saturday and Sunday (rota weekends): 07:30 - 15:15

About the Role

Working at HMP Wakefield, you'll help maintain a safe, clean and secure environment while supporting the operational needs of one of the UK's most important prison facilities.

At Amey, we're supporting His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing safe, clean and efficient prisons. By using our facilities management expertise, we help keep secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly.

What You Will Do

  • Deliver grounds maintenance activities including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning and seasonal horticultural work.
  • Support the upkeep of the prison estate through litter clearance and waste management activities.
  • Operate grounds maintenance machinery, light plant and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Assist with drainage works and general external maintenance duties.
  • Maintain outdoor areas to a high standard, ensuring they remain safe, presentable and fit for purpose.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and prison staff to deliver a quality service.

What You Will Bring

  • Essential:
    • Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, environmental services or waste management.
    • A positive and proactive approach to work.
    • Good understanding of health and safety practices.
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Strong team-working skills and a willingness to learn.
  • Desirable:
    • Grounds maintenance machinery experience.
    • Relevant grounds maintenance tickets or qualifications (training can be provided).

Security Clearance

Prison Security Clearance, Counter Terrorism Check and standard DBS will be required for this role. Amey will support successful applicants through the vetting process. Clearance does not need to be held before application.
