We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Landscape and Play Operative to join Southampton City Council.
About The Team
Southampton has a wide range of play areas, outdoor recreation spaces and public open spaces used by children, young people, families and communities across the city. This role plays an important part in helping to ensure those facilities are safe, well maintained and inspected to appropriate standards. Working as part of the wider Green City and Infrastructure service, you will support the effective inspection, reporting and monitoring of play equipment, surfacing, ancillary assets and associated public realm infrastructure.
About The Role
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Carrying out routine, operational and recorded inspections of play areas, outdoor fitness equipment and associated public open space assets across the city.
- Identifying defects, hazards and maintenance requirements, taking appropriate action to make equipment safe where necessary and ensuring issues are reported accurately and promptly.
- Maintaining clear inspection records and supporting compliance with relevant health and safety requirements, industry standards and Council procedures.
- Working closely with operational teams, contractors and service managers to prioritise repairs, monitor completion of works and support continuous improvement of play area standards.
- Providing a visible and professional presence on site, responding appropriately to enquiries from residents, colleagues and other stakeholders.

About You
To be successful in the role you will have practical experience of inspecting, maintaining or managing play areas, public open spaces or similar outdoor assets. You will be confident working independently, able to assess risk, make sound decisions on site and maintain accurate records. A recognised play inspection qualification, such as RoSPA or RPII training, would be desirable, although relevant experience and a willingness to undertake further training will also be considered. You will need good communication skills, a positive and practical approach, and the ability to manage a busy inspection schedule across multiple locations.

What We Can Offer You
Salary: The salary band for this role is Grade 6. The starting salary is £28,792 with annual progression through the salary bands.
This is a Grade 6 post working 39 hours over 5 days each week. The working pattern includes 2 hours per week accrued as TOIL, supporting the operational needs of the service while providing flexibility in how additional time is managed.
