Exciting Career Opportunity – Grounds Person | University of Essex

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Grounds Team at the University of Essex as a Grounds Person.

Our Grounds Section is responsible for maintaining the University’s landscapes across two campuses, including an impressive 230 acres at our Colchester campus. This unique environment includes approximately 30 acres of sports pitches, nearly 3,000 notable trees and extensive historic parkland, with parts of the landscape being Grade II Listed.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about horticulture, landscape management, biodiversity and working in a varied and unique environment.

About the role

As part of the Grounds Team, you will:

  • Maintain and enhance over 230 acres of historic parkland to a consistently high standard.
  • Undertake a wide range of grounds maintenance activities, including planting, maintaining flower beds, leaf collection and general landscape management.
  • Support the monitoring and enhancement of habitats and biodiversity across the estate.
  • Operate, maintain and care for a range of professional grounds machinery, including mowers, tractors, aerators and scarifiers, ensuring equipment is maintained and presented to a high standard.
  • Undertake snow clearance and gritting when required to help maintain safe access across campus.
  • Work as part of a professional and dedicated team, helping to ensure that the University’s grounds are maintained to an excellent standard.
  • Represent the Grounds Team professionally at all times when working across the University estate.
