Group Financial Controller | Genuine FD Succession Opportunity

Doncaster | Established Group | 3–5 year route to Group Finance Director

This is not simply another Financial Controller role. It is a genuine succession opportunity for an ambitious finance leader who wants to become a Group Finance Director — with the time, exposure and support to make that progression successfully.

Joining an established and successful Doncaster-based group comprising multiple operating businesses, you will work closely with the long-serving Group Finance Director, initially taking increasing ownership of the finance function before ultimately succeeding them over the next 3–5 years.

You will inherit an established team and strong foundations, but there is plenty to get involved in. The Group continues to evolve and finance plays an important role in supporting commercial decisions, improving performance and shaping its future direction.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As Group Financial Controller, you will:

  • Take ownership of monthly and statutory reporting across the Group.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
  • Develop commercial reporting, KPIs and management information that genuinely helps the business make better decisions.
  • Continue to improve financial systems, controls and processes.
  • Work closely with operational leaders across seven businesses to drive performance.
  • Lead, develop and get the best from the finance team.
  • Gain increasing exposure to the strategic agenda of the Group as you develop towards the Finance Director role.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified.
  • Already operating as a Financial Controller or at a similar level, within manufacturing, engineering, construction or another operationally complex business.
  • Technically strong but, importantly, commercially curious.
  • Comfortable getting into the detail while also seeing the bigger picture.
  • Confident working with and influencing senior leaders across a diverse group of businesses.
  • Ambitious to become a Finance Director rather than simply looking for their next Financial Controller position.
  • Exposure to M&A, acquisitions or post-deal integration would be particularly useful.

For someone with the ability and ambition to become a Group Finance Director, this is an unusually good opportunity to make that step properly rather than having to wait for someone to take a chance on you.
