Group Head of Finance | Future CFO Opportunity

Surrey | Hybrid
Salary: in the region of £100k+ plus bonus & benefits

Are you an ambitious senior finance leader looking for a role that could genuinely take you towards CFO?

Sectora Group has been exclusively engaged to appoint a newly created Group Head of Finance for a growing, private equity-backed organisation operating within the UK energy sector.

The business has experienced significant growth, both organically and through acquisition, and has ambitious plans for its next chapter. With a multi-entity Group spanning technology, data, services and field-based operations, its increasing scale and complexity are creating an exciting opportunity for an accomplished finance leader to play a central role in what comes next.

As the Group continues to grow, the CFO is increasingly moving his focus towards strategy, M&A, funding and investor relationships. This newly created position will take ownership of the day-to-day Group finance function, providing the leadership, control and commercial insight required to support that transition.

There is, however, a much bigger opportunity behind the immediate role.

This appointment forms part of the organisation’s longer-term CFO succession plan.

For the right individual, there is a genuine opportunity to work closely with an experienced CFO, broaden your exposure across an acquisitive PE-backed environment and develop towards becoming a future CFO of the Group.

The Role

You will take leadership of the day-to-day finance function across a growing multi-entity organisation, with responsibility spanning management reporting, forecasting, cash, financial control, team development, systems and acquisition integration.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

This is not simply about keeping the numbers moving. The business is integrating acquired companies, strengthening Group-wide financial disciplines and building the infrastructure needed to support its next stage of growth.

Your remit will include:

  • Ownership of Group month-end, management accounts, consolidation and Board reporting
  • Budgeting, forecasting, cash management and working capital
  • High-quality reporting for the CFO, Board, investors and lenders
  • Strengthening financial controls, processes and reporting across the Group
  • Leading, mentoring and developing the wider finance team
  • Integrating acquired businesses into a consistent Group finance framework
  • Improving systems, data quality and financial insight
  • Partnering with commercial and operational leaders across the business
  • Supporting acquisition analysis, modelling and post-deal integration
  • Gradually broadening your exposure in preparation for a potential future CFO role

Who Are We Looking For?

You will be a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) who has already built substantial finance leadership experience and is now ready for greater breadth, complexity and responsibility. You could currently be operating as a Head of Finance, Group Financial Controller, Financial Controller or Finance Director. Title is less important than the journey you have been on and where you want to go next.

We are particularly interested in people who can demonstrate experience of growth and change. You will need the confidence to operate at a senior level, challenge constructively and lead a team, while remaining practical enough to get into the detail when required.

Experience within a private equity-backed or acquisitive environment, acquisition integration, multi-entity reporting, lender requirements, recurring revenues or service-led organisations would be particularly relevant.

We are looking for someone who has built strong foundations, knows there is more to learn and wants the opportunity to develop alongside an experienced CFO, with a genuine potential route to succeeding them as the organisation continues to grow. That succession opportunity is a deliberate part of the appointment rather than simply a vague promise of progression.

Package

£100,000 basic salary, with some flexibility for an exceptional individual, plus annual performance-related bonus, pension, progressive holiday allowance and company EV scheme.

The role will be based in Kingston upon Thames with hybrid working. Greater office presence will be expected initially while the successful individual builds relationships and gets under the skin of the Group, with the intention of moving towards approximately three days in the office and two from home.

If you're looking for a role where everything is already built, this probably isn't it.

If you're excited by the opportunity to help shape a growing finance function, work alongside an experienced CFO through the next stage of an acquisitive business and build the experience that could ultimately enable you to take that seat yourself, we'd love to hear from you.
