Due to continued success and future business growth, we have an exciting opportunity for a Group Landscape Architect to join our Group Design team based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.


The Role

Are you a design focused professional with a keen interest in creating attractive public open spaces that enhance communities?

Are you passionate about shaping and delivering high quality, commercially effective residential developments through exceptional landscape strategy and design?

Are you a qualified Landscape Architect or Senior Landscape Architect looking to transfer your expertise in-house with a leading residential developer?

Joining our team as Group Landscape Architect, you will play a key role in influencing landscape strategy and design quality across our developments. You will provide in-house landscape design expertise, supporting the preparation of matters such as planning application drawings, landscape strategies and landscape assessments.

Working closely with Group Design, regional functions including Technical and Commercial and external specialists, the Group Landscape Architect will drive landscape excellence throughout the development process.

This is an exciting and varied role, providing the opportunity to deliver in-house landscape design expertise while influencing and shaping the design vision of residential developments from planning through to design and delivery.


Key Duties and Requirements

You will also be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Preparing and contributing to landscape and visual impact assessments, landscape appraisals, feasibility studies and masterplans.
  • Reviewing site constraints and opportunities, including landscape character, visual sensitivity, ecology, topography and existing vegetation.
  • Preparing landscape strategies, concept landscape plans, planning application landscape drawings and contributing to Design & Access Statements and other planning supporting documents where required.
  • Working in collaboration with the Group Design Team to develop landscape led residential layouts, public open space strategies and placemaking proposals.
  • Providing advice on street scenes, public realm design, boundary treatments, planting strategies and open space quality.
  • Supporting the integration of green infrastructure, SuDS, biodiversity and ecological enhancement from the early design stages.
  • Working alongside Ecologists and Environmental Consultants to incorporate ecological recommendations into landscape proposals.
  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), habitat creation, native planting, ecological connectivity and sustainable landscape solutions.
  • Production of planting plans, landscape schedules, specifications, management plans and technical landscape information.
  • Ensuring landscape drawings are suitable for planning submissions and aligned with Group CAD and presentation standards.
  • Working closely with Group Design, Group Planning and regional functions including Technical and Commercial teams, and liaison with external consultancies and specialists as required.
  • Supporting the overall improved consistency, efficiency and quality of landscape design across Avant Homes developments.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven experience in a similar role at Landscape Architect or Senior Landscape Architect level, with a strong track record of balancing design quality, planning requirements, commercial objectives and long-term landscape management and maintenance considerations.

Our ideal Group Landscape Architect will possess experience of working within residential development, either client side or within a consultancy environment. Excellent design and technical skills, together with the ability to deliver practical, sustainable and commercially viable landscape solutions that enhance the quality and appeal of our residential developments, will be key to success in this role.

To be considered for this role you must also possess:

  • A degree in Landscape Architecture or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years' experience in landscape architecture, preferably with exposure to residential development.
  • Experience producing planning application landscape drawings and supporting documents.
  • Strong understanding of residential development design, placemaking and public open space requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the UK planning system and planning application requirements.
  • An understanding of ecological considerations and biodiversity requirements within residential development is desirable.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • A full driving licence as travel to regional offices and developments is required.
  • Strong self-management skills, with the ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and maintain attention to detail.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach to changing requirements.
