CarpetWays is an established, family-run retail flooring company headquartered in a Carlisle superstore, with seven stores operating from Kendal to Falkirk. The business also includes a wholesale sister company, FSL Flooring Scotland Ltd, located in Eastriggs. CarpetWays supplies and retails a broad range of products including LVT, laminate, solid wood, engineered wood, vinyl, carpets, artificial grass, and beds. The company works with well-known brands such as Abingdon, Cormar, Luvanto, Berry-Aloc, Karndean, AGT, and Krono. Team members join a growing, customer-focused organization with strong local roots and an expanding regional presence.
Role Description
The Group Operations Director is a full-time, on-site role based in Carlisle, responsible for overseeing operational performance across all CarpetWays retail locations and the wholesale sister company. This role leads store and warehouse operations, ensuring consistent standards in stock management, merchandising, customer service, and health and safety compliance. The Group Operations Director develops and implements operational strategies, manages budgets and cost controls, and uses performance data to drive improvements in efficiency and profitability. Day-to-day responsibilities include leading and coaching management teams, coordinating cross-site projects, optimizing processes, and collaborating closely with senior leadership on business planning and growth initiatives.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong Operations Management skills, including process optimization, multi-site coordination, and performance monitoring.
- Candidates should possess advanced Analytical Skills to interpret financial, sales, and operational data and make evidence-based decisions.
- Candidates should possess effective Team Management capabilities, including leadership, coaching, and developing diverse teams across multiple locations.
- Candidates should possess sound Budgeting and financial management skills to control costs, manage resources, and support profitability.
- Candidates should possess a commitment to high-quality Customer Service, ensuring consistent, positive experiences across all stores.
- Proven experience in senior operations or multi-site retail management, ideally in flooring, home improvement, or related sectors.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate at all levels of the organization.
- Experience in change management, implementation of new systems or processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Proficiency with retail or ERP systems and Microsoft Office tools for reporting and analysis.
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in business, operations, or a related field is advantageous.

GROUP OPERATIONS & COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR
A major senior management opportunity within a large and growing group of businesses
We are looking for an exceptional Group Operations & Commercial Director to join our senior team and take a leading role in the day-to-day running, performance and continued growth of our group of businesses.
This is a big, busy and highly responsible position for an experienced individual who wants genuine responsibility and the opportunity to make a significant impact.
Our group currently consists of:
- 7 retail stores
- A large wholesale flooring business
- 3 holiday parks
We are looking for someone who can become a key part of the business and act as a senior right-hand person to the owners, taking ownership of the operational and commercial performance across the group.
THE ROLE
This is a hands-on senior leadership position.
You will have responsibility for ensuring our businesses are operating effectively, our teams are performing, our managers are being managed and supported, and our sales and commercial performance continue to grow.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Taking overall responsibility for day-to-day operational performance across the group
- Managing, supporting and developing our existing managers
- Driving sales performance across the retail, wholesale and holiday park businesses
- Setting targets and holding managers and teams accountable for results
- Regularly visiting stores, the wholesale operation and holiday parks
- Recruiting, interviewing and selecting new employees
- Dealing with staffing issues, performance management and employee matters
- Ensuring stores and businesses have appropriate staffing and cover
- Motivating teams and creating a strong sales-focused culture
- Driving holiday park sales, occupancy and commercial performance
- Working closely with marketing to maximise opportunities and generate sales
- Identifying areas where we can improve turnover, margins and profitability
- Reviewing performance figures and taking action where businesses or teams are underperforming
- Improving systems, processes, standards and accountability
- Dealing with problems quickly and finding practical solutions
- Working closely with the owners on strategy, performance and future growth
- Providing regular reporting and clear commercial insight to the owners
- Taking ownership of issues rather than waiting to be told what to do

THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
This role is not for someone looking for a quiet 9-to-5 Monday to Friday management position.
We need someone who is energetic, commercially driven, highly organised and confident managing people at every level.
You must be comfortable:

EXPERIENCE
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
- Multi-site retail
- Wholesale
- Hospitality or holiday parks
- Sales leadership
- Commercial management
- Operations management
- Managing managers and large teams
Experience across multiple sectors would be advantageous, but attitude, leadership ability, commercial understanding and proven results are equally important.
