Role Description
The post holder will act as the clinical expert and professional resource for children and young people with Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassaemia, their families and carers, and the multidisciplinary team involved in their care.
To provide expert clinical leadership and specialist nursing care for children and young people with haemoglobinopathies, delivering high-quality, evidence-based care whilst leading service development, education, research and quality improvement across the patient pathway.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading, managing, and developing a specialist haemoglobinopathy service, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, clinically effective care and an excellent patient and family experience.
To provide strategic direction, clinical leadership, and expert guidance to support the continuous development of the service and improvement of patient outcomes. To lead the development of clinical standards, workforce capability, and service improvement initiatives, supporting the advancement of haemoglobinopathy care locally, regionally, and nationally where appropriate.
Working collaboratively with medical, nursing, allied health professional, community, and wider healthcare teams, the post holder will directly and indirectly influence all aspects of care for children with haemoglobinopathies.

Responsibilities
- Provide specialist assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for children and young people with haemoglobinopathies and their families
- Act as key point of contact, delivering expert advice, support and education to patients, families and healthcare professionals
- Manage a specialist caseload autonomously, referrals, undertaking advanced clinical assessment and escalating concerns appropriately
- Support delivery of annual reviews, investigations, treatment monitoring and multidisciplinary care planning
- Participate in MDT meetings, clinics and regional haemoglobinopathy networks
- Lead neonatal haemoglobinopathy screening follow-up service, providing counselling and support to families of affected infants and carriers
- Communicate complex sensitive information compassionately
- Support medicines optimisation and treatment adherence
- Develop and implement evidence-based clinical pathways, guidelines and standards of care
- Work with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies
- Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement, research service development initiatives in line with national standards and best practice
- Act as a clinical expert, resource for staff within the speciality
- Provide education, training and support to healthcare professionals, patients, families
- Maintain professional competence
- Lead and participate in audit, governance, research, quality improvement
- Support service redesign, policy development and implementation of national and local guidance
