Substantive Consultant Haematologist Opportunity in the West Midlands
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Consultant Haematologist to join an established Haematology service in the West Midlands, helping to provide and further develop a sustainable Consultant-delivered service.
The department provides a broad range of clinical and laboratory Haematology services, with close links to regional and tertiary centres. The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team and will have the opportunity to develop a leadership role in an area of professional interest.
Candidates with wide-ranging general Haematology training are particularly encouraged to apply. Specialist skills that complement the existing Consultant team are also welcome.
The Role
The successful Consultant will have hands-on clinical involvement and share responsibility for Haematology patients alongside the existing Consultant and specialist team.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Providing Consultant-level clinical care across the full range of Haematology.
- Sharing responsibility for Haematology patients with the existing Consultant team.
- Providing specialist advice to other clinical teams.
- Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings with regional colleagues.
- Taking a lead role in an area of professional interest.
- Contributing to the development of clinical policies and pathways.
- Working closely with GPs, Consultants, nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals.
- Supporting education and training across the multidisciplinary team.
- Participating actively in clinical audit and clinical governance.
- Maintaining CPD and participating in appraisal and revalidation.
- Contributing to clinical research and clinical trials.

Clinical Haematology
The department has a broad clinical workload, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to service delivery and provide specialist advice across the wider organisation.
The service provides Level 2a haemato-oncology care, supported by a dedicated chemotherapy unit. Patients requiring more complex inpatient management or Level 2b/3 care are transferred to regional centres, with outpatient follow-up continuing locally where appropriate.
The service manages approximately 100 new haematological malignancy diagnoses each year, with most patients receiving care locally.
MDT & Regional Working
The department has established links with regional Haematology services and participates in a joint weekly MDT for lymphomas and other haematological malignancies.
The service is also involved in regional networks and works closely with tertiary centres for patients requiring highly specialised care, including stem cell transplantation.
Future integration of working practices may include a joint on-call and attending system with regional colleagues.
Research & Clinical Trials
The department actively supports clinical research and has a dedicated clinical trials team working jointly with oncology.
The service aims to recruit approximately 10% of patients into NCRI-badged studies, allowing the successful Consultant to participate in clinical trials and act as Principal Investigator for appropriate studies.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
Applicants Must Have
- Full and Specialist Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a licence to practise, or be eligible for Specialist Registration within six months of interview.
- UK-trained applicants must hold a CCT or be within six months of obtaining CCT at interview.
- Non-UK-trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
- MRCP or equivalent
- FRCPath or equivalent
- Proven experience as a clinical and laboratory Haematologist
- Broad-based knowledge across all aspects of Haematology
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across emergency and elective Haematology.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care.
- Proven commitment to medical education and teaching.
- Experience of clinical audit and governance.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Ability to make decisions, take responsibility and exercise appropriate authority.
- Good time-management and organisational skills.
- Ability to adapt to different environments and challenging situations.
- Ability to empathise with patients and colleagues.
- Access to transport.
