As a Handy Helper Technician, every day is different. From fitting grab rails and smoke alarms to carrying out minor repairs, gardening tasks and home safety improvements, you'll help people remain safe, independent and confident in their own homes.
Hours
- 14 hours per week – Wednesday and Thursday
Contract
- 12-month fixed-term contract
Salary
- £28,000 FTE

About The Role
The Handy Helper Technician supports the Handy Helpers project by delivering practical home maintenance, safety improvements and preventative support for older people and disabled adults across Buckinghamshire.
The overall aim of the role is to help clients remain safe, independent and well at home by reducing hazards, completing small practical tasks and supporting everyday household needs that clients may struggle to manage themselves.
Handy Helpers provides free practical support to eligible clients aged 65 or above who are living with a disability, although clients may need to pay for materials. The service is designed to reduce risks, improve home safety and support independent living.
This is a practical, community-facing role for someone with strong handyperson skills who enjoys varied work and wants to make a direct difference to the safety, confidence and independence of vulnerable residents across Buckinghamshire.
Handy Helpers provides free practical support to eligible clients aged 65+ or below who are living with a disability. Although clients may need to pay for materials. The service is designed to reduce risks, improve home safety and support independent living. The tasks will focus on the areas below:
- Home maintenance tasks: Key tasks including garden clearance, internal and external repairs, installations, small decorating tasks, basic plumbing, waste removal, furniture movement and household hazard reduction.
- Home safety work: Key tasks include fitting items such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, key safes, grab rails, locks, doorbells, security lights and wireless alarms. As well as securing loose carpets, cables and other trip hazards.
- Client-facing duties: Speaking with clients at the start and end of visits, offering practical advice, handling donations or payments where needed and maintaining respectful professional boundaries.
- Service administration: The technician must complete digital forms and take photographs of work carried out.
- Safety and compliance: The role requires risk assessments in clients’ homes, safe working practices, tool and equipment checks, van inspections, secure storage and completion of a DBS check.

About You
We are also looking for someone who:
- Will collaborate with the VCSE & Community Development Officer, support CIB volunteers and occasionally help supervise volunteer teams from companies or educational institutions.
- Possesses strong communication, empathy, discretion, cultural awareness, a respectful and non-judgemental approach, and confidence working with older and vulnerable people.
- Can work independently, adhere to lone-worker practices, manage time effectively, prioritise tasks, follow instructions, contribute to a team and offer constructive feedback to improve service delivery.
- Be comfortable using smartphones or iPads, completing digital records and using tools such as Google Maps to travel between client visits.
Essential Requirements
Candidates must:
- Hold a full British driving licence
- Be able to demonstrate competence or provide qualifications in using gardening equipment such as brush cutters, hedge cutters and mowers.
- Be able to drive the charity's long-wheelbase van
- Be willing to use their own vehicle on rare occasions (mileage reimbursed)
- Be willing to complete a Standard DBS check
- Be able to complete manual labour as role involves lifting and bending. Requires good manual dexterity. Includes working with tools and materials while moving around uneven surfaces, including gardens and clients' homes.
Desirable requirements
Vocational, Trade Or First Aid Qualifications Are Desirable.
