The postholder will work closely with the Liver Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team, other clinicians, booking staff, and support agencies in the community to promote patient engagement in the hepatocellular cancer (HCC) surveillance pathway and improve the efficiency of the service.
They will develop, maintain, and update existing patient databases, collate results for review by the CNS team, provide administrative support, and facilitate audit of the HCC surveillance pathway. In addition, they will be expected to track patients through the system and follow up with patients who miss appointments.
There is potential, dependent on a suitable applicant, to expand the role to learn how to perform FibroScan.
Main Duties of the Job
- Improve the current surveillance system and promote patient engagement in surveillance
- Support data collection and audit
- Track patients with suspected HCC
- Book patients for Nurse-Led Stable Cirrhosis clinics

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Improve the Current Surveillance System and Promote Patient Engagement in Surveillance
- Maintain and update the database
- Provide support to the CNS team by sending out surveillance invitation letters and organizing FibroScan and outpatient appointments
- Collate blood test and ultrasound results for review by the Liver CNS team
- Contact patients who do not attend for surveillance and encourage and facilitate participation, including liaising with community support workers or assisting with coordinating transport for appointments
- Build on existing contacts with Drug and Alcohol Support and Homeless Teams in the community fostered through Hep C outreach and the Alcohol Liaison Team to promote engagement of disadvantaged patients with HCC surveillance, thus reducing health inequalities
- Help develop a pathway for referral of at-risk patients identified from FibroScan now taking place in Drug and Alcohol Services
- Assist the CNS team with re-engaging known Hep C patients at risk of HCC and lost to follow up
Potential (Dependent on Suitable Applicant) to Expand Role to Use of FibroScan
Support Data Collection and Audit
- Collect data on the numbers of new patients added to the surveillance database, numbers of patients invited for surveillance, and the numbers attending on a quarterly basis
- Use systematic case finding by review of Liver Clinic letters, diagnostic codes from the Business Intelligence Unit, and abnormal FibroScan results to identify patients at risk of HCC who may not have been added to the database and help develop processes to improve this
Track Patients with Suspected HCC

- Ensure patients with suspected HCC have timely arrangement of further scans, outpatient follow-up, and assist with referral to the Regional Hepatobiliary MDT
- Facilitate good liaison and communication between the RUH and the regional treatment centre at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston (Bristol Royal Infirmary) for the treatment and monitoring of patients with HCC
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Experience of coordinating patient pathways and managing multiple appointments or referrals simultaneously
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working with cancer services, endoscopy, hepatology, gastroenterology

- Experience using electronic patient record systems and NHS databases
Desirable Criteria
- Experience producing reports, analysing data, or monitoring pathway performance
