The Opportunity

Head Gardener & Estate Landscape Manager (Historic Estate & Visitor Attraction)

We are seeking an exceptional operations-minded horticulturalist to take on the dual mantle of Head Gardener and Estate Landscape Manager.

In this role, you will report directly to the Operations Director and be fully responsible for the presentation, strategic development, and operational reality of our visitor destination. You will have the autonomy to influence future planting, drive machinery investment, and shape the estate culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Estate & Horticultural Leadership
    • Oversee the long-term seasonal planning, presentation, and maintenance of all gardens, woodlands, and the wider heritage landscape to impeccable standards.

  • Team Management

    • Direct, mentor, and develop the estate gardening and maintenance team, fostering a culture of pride, discretion, and excellence.
  • The Visitor Experience

  • Operational & Financial Control

    • Manage infrastructure, machinery investments, health & safety competence, contractors, and annual budgets.

Candidate Profile

Who You Are

This role requires a unique blend of elite horticultural artistry and robust commercial acumen. You are likely an established Head Gardener, Horticultural Manager, or Grounds Manager currently working within a major castle estate, large visitor garden, or leading private estate.

Your Experience & Attributes

  • Horticultural Excellence

    • Exceptional plant knowledge matched with an understanding of RHS-quality presentation and heritage landscapes.
  • Proven Leadership

    • Experience managing an estate team and working directly alongside owners or directors to execute a shared vision.
  • Commercial Savvy

    • A strong track record in budget responsibility, contractor management, and balancing aesthetic ideals with operational realities.
  • Visitor-Centric Mindset

    • Experience in managing public-facing gardens that welcome tens of thousands of visitors annually.
  • Estate Competence

    • Practical knowledge of woodland management, estate machinery, infrastructure, and stringent health & safety protocols.
