Are you a strategic thinker who thrives at the intersection of Life & Health reinsurance, capital management and alternative capital? Do you want to shape how risk transfer solutions create real value for a global L&H business? If so, this could be the role for you.
About the Role
As Head L&H Retro, you will lead Swiss Re's Life & Health retrocession activities and play a pivotal role in expanding how traditional and alternative capital solutions support the L&H business. This is a high-impact, highly collaborative role where you won't just respond to defined retrocession needs — you'll proactively identify opportunities, challenge established approaches and drive innovative solutions from idea to execution. As part of Swiss Re's Alternative Capital Partners Team, you'll sit at the heart of a network spanning underwriting, finance, capital management, legal and external markets, making this a uniquely broad and exciting leadership position.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the L&H Retro team, setting its strategic direction and ensuring high-quality structuring and execution of transactions across lines of business
- Build a strong, proactive partnership with the L&H Business Unit, developing a deep understanding of its portfolio, strategic priorities and capital needs
- Identify opportunities where retrocession or other risk-transfer solutions can support the business — going beyond predefined transaction requests to surface new value
- Develop and evaluate innovative solutions across the full spectrum, from traditional retrocession structures to alternative capital and third-party investor transactions, where applicable in close collaboration with our ILS structuring team
- Drive transactions from ideation to execution, bringing together expertise across underwriting, structuring, finance, legal, risk and capital management
- Engage with external markets and counterparties, including traditional reinsurers and alternative capital providers, to understand market appetite and develop new opportunities
- Strengthen connectivity between L&H and the broader alternative capital partner team, identifying where third-party capital can complement Swiss Re's balance sheet
- Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of collaboration, commercial thinking, curiosity and strong ownership
About the Team
The L&H Retro team is part of the Swiss Re's Alternative Capital Partner team and responsible for the Life & Health retrocession structuring activities across lines of business. The team manages the process — from ideation through to structuring and executing transactions in close collaboration with the business and other alternative capital partner teams. Working at the intersection of reinsurance, capital management and alternative capital, the team plays a critical role in enabling the L&H Business Unit to manage risk, improve capital efficiency and support profitable growth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
