Role Purpose

Axion delivers fire risk assessment and fire door inspection services through a UK-wide network of field-based assessors and inspectors. The Head of Assessors leads that network day to day.

The role exists to make sure three things are true at all times: that the right assessor is sent to the right building, that the work leaving Axion is technically sound and defensible, and that every assessor's competence is current, evidenced and improving.

This is deliberately not a desk role. The postholder will spend the majority of their week on the road, meeting assessors at the buildings they are assessing, watching them work, and supporting them in person. Remote management of a dispersed technical team does not produce reliable quality, and this role is designed on that premise.

About Axion / Riskhub Group

Axion Consultancy is part of the Riskhub Group. We're a passionate and collaborative team united by a shared goal: revolutionising property compliance through innovative technology. We take immense pride in our achievements, knowing that none of it would be possible without the dedication and talent of our people.

As an energetic, forward-thinking and female-led business, we are all about our people. We are growing rapidly year-on-year and it's the people within the business that powers it. We are on the lookout for dedicated, ambitious colleagues who want to be part of a team where everyone's ideas are welcome, and everyone's role is essential to our collective growth and success.

The core set of behaviours that characterise our ethos and drive everything we do are:

  • We speak clearly, honestly and with passion for what we do.
  • We take time to understand problems so we can give confident solutions.
  • We are a unified team, developing Riskhub together, because we believe what we're doing is good.
  • Everyone's ideas are valid and welcome.
  • Our entire team is empowered to make decisions.
  • We get things done.

Key Responsibilities

Leading the assessor network

  • Day-to-day line management of the full network of fire risk assessors and fire door inspectors.
  • Structured one-to-ones with every member of the network on a published cycle, recorded and followed up.
  • Managing performance, attendance, conduct and wellbeing, working with HR where a formal process is needed.
  • Recruiting, inducting and probating new assessors and inspectors, including verifying their competence before they are released to work unsupervised.
  • Acting as first point of escalation for technical and operational queries from the field.
  • Keeping a dispersed team connected to the business - team meetings, technical briefings and peer learning.

Quality assurance and technical oversight

  • Carrying out site-based spot checks: accompanying assessors on live assessments and inspections, observing method and judgement rather than only reviewing the finished report.
  • Re-visiting a sample of completed premises independently to test whether findings were accurate and complete.
  • Reviewing and, where appointed as a Validator, validating fire risk assessments before issue in line with Axion's BAFE SP205 procedure.
  • Operating a documented QA sampling regime with a defined frequency per assessor, weighted towards new starters, higher-risk premises and anyone showing an adverse trend.
  • Turning recurring technical weaknesses into targeted training rather than individual corrections.
  • Leading the technical response when an assessment is challenged by a client, an enforcing authority, or following an incident.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Competence and development

  • Maintaining an individual competence record for every assessor and inspector, mapped to the tiers in BS 8674:2025 and to the premises types each person is authorised to assess.
  • Managing the formal review of each assessor's competence at intervals not exceeding 36 months, as required under BAFE SP205.
  • Deciding and enforcing the scope of work each individual is authorised to undertake, and escalating anything outside it.
  • Owning the CPD programme: setting expectations, monitoring completion and evidencing it for audit.
  • Tracking qualification renewals and third-party certifications, including fire door inspection certification.
  • Building development plans that move assessors up the competence tiers, and identifying successors for senior roles.

Accreditation, legislation and standards

  • Keeping the network working in line with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire Safety Act 2021, the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, and the equivalent Scottish and Welsh regimes.
  • Maintaining readiness for BAFE SP205 surveillance audits and supporting recertification, including evidence of assessor competence, validation records and CPD.
  • Ensuring consistent methodology and consistent use of Axion's templates and digital inspection platform across the whole network.
  • Monitoring changes to legislation, standards and guidance, and briefing the network on what changes in practice.

Operational delivery

  • Working with the Delivery team on scheduling, geographic coverage and capacity planning.
  • Monitoring productivity, turnaround times and report quality, and holding the balance between volume and quality.
  • Managing the use of associate and subcontract assessors, including competence verification before they are engaged.
  • Providing technical input to bids and tenders on resourcing, methodology and deliverability.
  • Reporting to the Director of Fire Risk Management on network performance, competence status, QA findings and risks.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Demonstrable, current experience of conducting fire risk assessments to a high standard, including residential and social housing stock.
  • Minimum four years' people management experience, including managing remote or field-based staff.
  • Level 4 or higher qualification in fire risk assessment, or equivalent demonstrable competence mapped against BS 8674.
  • Detailed, current knowledge of fire safety legislation, supporting guidance and the assessor competency framework.
  • Working knowledge of BAFE SP205, including how competence review and validation operate in practice.
  • The credibility to be taken seriously by a graduate assessor, a principal consultant and a client's head of compliance alike.
  • Comfortable giving direct feedback on technical work and holding a standard when it is inconvenient.
  • Full UK driving licence, and genuine willingness to travel nationally with regular overnight stays.

Desirable

  • Experience gained within a BAFE SP205 certified organisation, ideally holding or having held Validator status.
  • Fire door inspection certification, or equivalent demonstrable fire door competence.
  • Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers or the Institute of Fire Safety Managers.
  • Experience of social housing clients and the compliance regimes they operate under.
  • Experience introducing or embedding a digital inspection or compliance platform across a field team.
  • Experience of post-incident or regulator-facing scrutiny of assessment work.
