Head of Business Development and Commercial Growth

£60,000 - £68,000 + bonus (up to 15%) | Godalming, Surrey | Full Time, Permanent

Are you a commercially driven leader who has genuinely taken a business, or a business unit, from underperforming to properly profitable? Our client is looking for someone to build and lead their commercial growth from the ground up.

They provide therapeutic education, animal-assisted interventions, and a growing range of training, events, and community activity across Surrey and Hampshire. They have a strong reputation, established sites, and a loyal audience, what they haven't yet had is dedicated commercial leadership to match.

That's where you come in.

This is a senior, genuinely accountable role. You'll take ownership of their existing commercial projects, training, events, their Awards programme, and community membership, while identifying and launching entirely new revenue streams. Two roles report to you directly, and you'll report straight to the CEO.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What you'll do:

  • Own the commercial performance of our client's existing projects and lead the team delivering them.
  • Identify, design, and launch new revenue-generating ventures, drawing on your own track record.
  • Find new ways to generate income from their sites and facilities outside of core hours.
  • Bring forward your own investment proposals, tied to the return each one will generate, rather than working from a fixed budget.
  • Be genuinely accountable for the commercial results you deliver.

What they're looking for:

  • A genuine, evidenced track record of taking a business or business unit from underperforming to properly profitable.
  • Direct experience building or launching a commercial venture from scratch.
  • Real commercial understanding of the training and/or events sectors.
  • Comfort proposing your own commercial targets and being held to them.
  • The ability to balance genuine commercial ambition with a values-led organisation, this isn't a role for someone who wants to strip out everything that isn't immediately profitable.
