Head of Clinical Engineering
Band 9 | from £121,528 including HCAS Inner London
Take Trust-wide responsibility for Clinical Engineering at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, leading the people, systems and services behind the safe and effective use of medical equipment across its clinical services.
This is a senior role where engineering, patient safety, clinical need and investment come together. As the Trust’s lead expert on medical devices, you’ll shape how equipment is procured, managed, maintained and replaced, while developing the long-term equipping strategies needed to support the Trust’s clinical services. Your remit stretches from specialist support for neonatal intensive care, high dependency areas and renal dialysis sites to Trust-wide medical equipment programmes and advice at Board level.

You’ll be professionally accountable for Clinical Engineering across the Trust, bringing together patient safety, compliance, asset management, procurement, maintenance, training and financial control.
With around 27,000 items of medical equipment covered by the Trust’s maintenance programme, this is a substantial operation. You’ll look at how equipment is being used across the organisation, where investment or replacement is needed and how assets can be managed more effectively to support clinical services and make the best use of available resources.
Shape the Trust’s approach to medical equipment
Lead the strategy and systems behind Clinical Engineering, taking responsibility for:
- Developing long-term strategies for the procurement, operation and replacement of medical equipment.
- Delivering the Trust’s capital and sub-capital medical equipment programme.
- Ensuring medical equipment is appropriately procured, installed, maintained and operated safely.
- Leading asset optimisation and the maintenance programme across approximately 27,000 items of medical equipment.
- Overseeing outsourced specialist maintenance contracts and monitoring performance.
- Ensuring Clinical Engineering operates within the required Quality Management System and regulatory framework.
- Managing responses to medical device safety alerts and adverse equipment incidents.
- Ensuring clinical staff receive the training they need to use medical devices safely and effectively.
- Assessing equipment requirements across the Trust and identifying opportunities for redeployment, standardisation and more effective use of assets.
- Providing specialist scientific and technical advice to clinicians, senior leaders, committees and project teams.
- Representing the Trust with external agencies and regulatory bodies.
- Briefing the Trust Board and executive committees on medical equipment, maintenance contracts, finance and performance.

Influence investment in medical technology
You’ll have a significant role in deciding how the Trust invests in medical equipment.
Leading the annual application process for new capital equipment, you’ll use your scientific and specialist knowledge to assess proposals against clinical need, engineering requirements, financial viability and risk.
You’ll also manage Clinical Engineering budgets, oversee expenditure and forecasting and help determine the most appropriate approach to maintaining individual items of equipment throughout their working life.
Lead the people and expertise behind it
Lead the Clinical Engineering team and its external specialist providers, creating a service that combines strong technical expertise with a clear understanding of what clinical teams need.
You’ll have responsibility for recruitment, performance, development and wellbeing within the team, while ensuring outsourced providers have the expertise and resources required to deliver compliant services.
At Trust level, you’ll work directly with divisional directors, clinical leaders, nursing, infection control, finance and procurement, giving you the opportunity to influence medical equipment decisions across the organisation.

What you’ll bring
You’ll bring substantial senior-level experience from a large healthcare environment, alongside a strong understanding of medical equipment management and the clinical, technical, regulatory and financial considerations that sit behind it.
You’ll need:
- A first degree or equivalent NHS management experience, with evidence of applying your expertise at this level.
- A master's degree in leadership, management or a relevant subject, or equivalent practical experience at this level.
- A postgraduate management qualification, or equivalent practical experience.
- Evidence of sustained continuing professional development.
- Strong knowledge of the statutory, regulatory and governance requirements surrounding medical equipment.
- Senior-level operational, HR and financial management experience within a large healthcare organisation.
- Clinical experience operating a wide range of medical equipment.
- Strong commercial and contractual experience, including large-scale contract management and negotiation.
- Experience managing significant budgets, forecasting, capital expenditure programmes and cost improvement requirements.
- The leadership and influencing skills to work across clinical, technical and corporate teams and report effectively at Board and Executive level.
First-hand engineering experience in electronic equipment design, construction and repair is listed as desirable rather than essential.
