About this role
The Head of Commercial & Marketing (HoCM) will play a key role in how our Charity is funded, presented to our key stakeholder (internal and external) and celebrates the impact the Physical Activity system is making on our communities.
As we enter a new 5-year strategy period, the HoCM will develop and deliver an income diversification strategy, identifying and securing new sources of funding for our Charity and our system partners. The HoCM will lead the creation and implementation of a new Marketing and Communications (including AI) Strategy, ensuring Active Cheshire is at the forefront of digital communications.

Nature & Scope
The Head of Commercial & Marketing (HoCM) will play a vital role in developing and implementing clear strategies aligned to our long-term funding, our voice as a strategic partner and delivering our ‘Playing our Part’ strategy. Working closely with the CEO, Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees to create and implement a new income diversification and sustainability strategy for the organisation including a mix of income streams.
The HoCM will develop and deliver a funding strategy aligned to our long term aims which ensures the delivery of our Strategic Outcomes: Improved positive outcomes for people, stronger and more collaborative partnerships, inclusive and sustainable spaces for physical activity and sport.
The HoCM will develop and deliver our Marketing strategy, linking closely with our data and insight team to ensure the story of change in Cheshire & Warrington is clearly articulated to internal and external stakeholders.
This role is a mix of operational, day to day delivery and long-term strategic thinking. The postholder will be a skilled, experienced and highly innovative professional, ready to embrace new technologies and deliver class-leading thought leadership.
Relationships
Positive internal relationships with the CEO, SLT, Team and Board will be critical to the success of this role. Externally, as an accomplished bid writer and relationship builder, you will bring a network of relationships already established in income generation roles, pertinent to the charitable sector. You will be able to utilise these networks to create and close high value propositions to further Active Cheshire’s Charitable aims.

You will quickly develop new relationships across Cheshire & Warrington with funders, trusts, foundations and grant givers to ensure the income generation targets of the role met, and exceeded.

You’ll position Active Cheshire as a thought leader across Cheshire & Warrington, ensure partners receive the right messages about us and the physical activity system, including the positive impact that Active Cheshire makes via its system partners. Your dedication to executing strategies to drive diversified income will be central to our plans, seeking new partnerships to deliver change and empowering people to become more physically active.
Accountabilities (not exhaustive)
- Work with the CEO and Board of Trustees to build and execute a new income diversification and sustainability strategy, meeting agreed income targets, utilising a mix of income streams but specifically focusing on:
- Leading the on-going development of opportunities to generate earned income through training, consultancy and support for corporates;
- Long-term strategic partnership with grant giving organisations, and
- Identifying, researching, approaching and managing corporate partnerships and relationships to maximise income for Active Cheshire.
- Develop strong relationships and raise the profile of Active Cheshire with funders, commissioners, corporates and potential major donors, as well as ensuring that the charity’s reputation and profile among current and potential key stakeholders is maintained and improved.
- Work with the Head of Finance and Compliance to produce financial projections and reports relating to relevant budgets and ensure all income generation activities embarked upon are cost effective.
- Lead the development and implementation of Active Cheshire’s brand and communications strategies to ensure effective internal and external communications that enable the achievement of business objectives.
- Support the communication of Active Cheshire’s Evaluation, Learning and Impact approaches to ensure high quality and consistent evaluation, insight and learning across the organisation.
- Prepare progress reports, correspondence, financial analysis etc as appropriate and present the same to Active Cheshire’s leadership team, Board of Trustees and external partners as required.
- As part of the Senior Leadership Team, provide advice and guidance to inform business planning and future strategic development opportunities.
- To be accountable for the achievement of performance targets relevant to the HoCM.
- Provide leadership and direction to members of the wider staff and Trustee teams, enabling them to grow and develop in their roles.
- Contribute to an inclusive working environment where diversity is valued and each team member is able to contribute to, promote and uphold equality, diversity and inclusion through everyday actions.
- Represent the charity at key events and meetings, providing strategic support to the CEO in key areas of the business.
- Attend training and development opportunities relevant to the post and/or self-development objectives.
- Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the post and the needs of the organisation.

Skills & experience
Essential
- 3 years’ experience in commercial income generation roles, with specific knowledge of the Charitable sector and grants income
- Strong commercial acumen, data analytics skills and knowledge of market research tools and grant finding software
- Understanding of omni-channel marketing, performance metrics and branding
- Advanced Relationship building skills and the ability to influence and negotiate
- Ability to work proactively with warm and cold leads to generate a comprehensive opportunity funnel
- Proactive, resilient and collaborative ‘can-do’ attitude
- Strong attention to detail
- Strategy Implementation skills
- Monitor against contracts/KPIs
- Impact report writing
