Location: Remote-working; mainland UK, with travel for meetings, conferences and customer visits as required
Start date: October 2026

Abitas Group is a remote-working organisation and is seeking an experienced, commercially minded and collaborative Head of Communications to help drive the next stage of the Group's growth. The post-holder must have the right to work in the UK and be willing to travel for meetings, conferences, media opportunities and customer visits as required. Out-of-hours work will occasionally be required.

The Role

Abitas Group is seeking an experienced and commercially focused Head of Communications to lead the Group's communications, marketing, digital and brand activity across its portfolio of membership organisations and commercial services. This is a senior strategic role responsible for developing and delivering communications strategies that support the Group's objectives and growth plans.

The role has responsibility for the full communications mix, including websites, digital channels, email marketing, social media, search visibility, PR, media relations, brand management, campaigns and content. A key priority will be turning communications activity into measurable organisational growth. The Head of Communications will work closely with colleagues to generate and nurture leads, support membership recruitment and retention, drive sales of CPD, events and services, and identify opportunities to increase engagement and income across the Group.

The successful candidate will combine strategic thinking with strong delivery skills, supporting senior leaders, campaigns, digital performance and audience engagement.

Main Purpose of the Job

To lead Abitas Group's communications and marketing activity, strengthening reputation, visibility, engagement and commercial performance. The post-holder will deliver an integrated communications strategy supporting audience growth, membership recruitment and retention, lead generation, service sales and stakeholder engagement, while ensuring activity is audience-focused, measurable and delivers value.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Leadership

  • Own, develop and deliver Abitas Group's communications strategy across all brands and business areas.
  • Translate Group priorities into clear, measurable plans that strengthen reputation, engagement and growth.
  • Act as a strategic adviser to the CEO, COO, Directors and Heads, ensuring communications activity is coordinated across the Group.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing, commercially focused approach to marketing and communications.

  • Lead Abitas Group's digital strategy across websites, email, social media and digital channels.
  • Drive continuous improvement of B2B and B2C websites, focusing on content, user experience, lead generation and conversion.
  • Own the Group's approach to SEO and AEO, improving visibility across traditional search and AI-driven platforms.
  • Use audience insight and performance data to identify opportunities and continually improve results.

Growth, Membership and Sales

  • Develop campaigns that generate leads, grow audiences and support sustainable growth.
  • Work closely with the membership team to drive acquisition, engagement, retention and renewal.
  • Lead marketing communications for CPD, events and paid-for services, helping increase bookings, sales and income.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-selling, audience development and stronger customer journeys across Group brands.

PR, Public Affairs and Advocacy

  • Develop and deliver a proactive PR and media strategy that strengthens profile, influence and reputation.
  • Support and help shape public affairs and advocacy activity, ensuring key messages and campaigns are clear, timely and impactful.
  • Work with colleagues and specialists to influence policy, contribute to sector debate and champion member interests.
  • Build strong relationships with journalists, editors, sector media and other influential stakeholders.
  • Create opportunities for thought leadership, expert comment, campaigns and executive profiling.
  • Lead press releases, media statements and reactive communications, supporting senior colleagues with messaging and media preparation.
  • Support reputational and sensitive communications when required.

Brand, Content and Campaigns

  • Protect and develop corporate and individual brand identities, ensuring clear and consistent positioning.
  • Lead integrated content and campaign planning across websites, email, social media, PR and other channels.
  • Ensure communications are audience-focused, compelling and commercially effective.
  • Manage creative, digital, PR and other external agencies and suppliers to deliver high-quality work and value for money.

Growth and Performance

  • Set clear KPIs and measure the impact of communications activity against Group objectives.
  • Monitor performance across digital reach, search visibility, lead generation, membership, campaign engagement, sales, PR and other key measures.
  • Use data and insight to improve campaigns, customer journeys, conversion and ROI.
  • Manage the communications budget effectively and provide clear reporting on performance and impact.

Collaboration and Wider Contribution

  • Work across the Group to increase visibility, engagement and growth.
  • Build strong relationships and embed effective marketing and communications practice throughout the organisation.
  • Ensure activity complies with relevant data protection, copyright, accessibility, brand and professional standards.
  • Contribute fully to the team and support wider organisational priorities and projects as required.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following experience, skills and personal qualities.

Essential

  • Significant experience in a senior marketing, communications or integrated communications role, with responsibility for strategy and delivery.
  • A strong track record of developing and delivering organisation-wide communications strategies that support growth, reputation and engagement.
  • Strong commercial awareness, with evidence of using communications to deliver measurable outcomes such as lead generation, membership growth, customer acquisition or sales.
  • Experience of developing and delivering integrated campaigns across multiple channels and audiences.
  • Strong digital marketing experience, including websites, email, social media and customer journeys, with responsibility for improving user experience, conversion and performance.
  • A strong understanding of SEO and emerging approaches to online discoverability, including AEO and AI-driven search.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience using data to set KPIs, evaluate activity and improve ROI.
  • Strong PR and media relations experience, including proactive media engagement, press materials, thought leadership and reactive communications.
  • Experience supporting public affairs, advocacy, influencing or stakeholder campaigns, with the ability to translate complex issues into clear messages.
  • Excellent written and editorial skills, with the ability to create high-quality content for different audiences and channels.
  • Excellent verbal, influencing and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to advise and work closely with senior leaders and subject specialists.
  • Experience managing corporate and/or multi-brand identities and ensuring clear, consistent positioning.
  • Strong project management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, campaigns and stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a membership body, professional association, education organisation, training provider or similar organisation.
  • Experience supporting membership acquisition, engagement, retention or renewal.
  • Experience marketing CPD, training, conferences, events or other paid-for professional services.
  • Experience working within a multi-brand or Group structure.
